I want to give away my BM 732 Ares...

I know you're talking about totally different finishes but I removed the bead blast from a 612, and I can still see the trademark although it's quite a bit harder to see.

maybe someone on this forum has the means nessecary to re-etch the BM butterfly onto the bare steel once/if I polish it.

Regarding the looks of jk904jk's knife - if the fellow on the receiving end meets jk904jk's criteria, I would think he'll appreciate (or quickly grow to appreciate) what he's getting. The worn, well-used look is genuine. It carries a certain credibility among folks like us that a new knife has to earn, and that a safequeen will never have - although safequeens are alluring in their own way...;)

That's just my opinion, but I'd leave it alone -

thx - cpr

I am a scout leader for 11 year old scouts. I have a scout who does not own a knife. I was teaching him just last scout meeting about how to properly handle, sharpen, use, etc various folders. I bet he would really appreciate a quality folder.

Thanks for the give away also, it is a great idea.

dont remove the coating, I think it looks perfect just the way it is.

and Im sorry but young kids cant appreciate nice things. I dont really consider myself to be an adult but I wouldnt give a used knife like that to anyone who isnt at least in high school. kids like shiney things and to be able to show off to their friends, very, very few would truely appreciate such a knife. its really hard to find those people though, and its rarer still to find one who hasnt found some way to get their hands on some sort of knife. You know my parents almost always said no when I asked for stuff so I skipped lunch so I could could buy stuff that I really wanted.

That is a nice knife too. In fact, if I honestly couldnt afford anything I would probably speak up, but of all the people on this forum I am probably one of the least needing. I also dont know anyone to give it to so I just hope the person who eventually gets this knife uses it every day and doesnt let it sit in a drawer.

Yeah, I would feel better about giving it to someone that is at least in highschool.

Im 13 years old and in Boy Scouts. I never really owned a nice knife, (the last campout I had, my cheap one fell apart when I was trying to get some kindling for the fire) and man when I saw this thread, I said OH man I want that knife!!! then I was reading through the posts and I think it should go to T. Erdelyi's daughters BF. An eagle scout w/ Diabetes, wow that would be hard. Also thanks for donating that I bet, and hope you make someone really happy with that knife.

Glad to meet a fellow bladeforums member with a good heart. :)

I know I don't have a high post count, I usually come here for information, as I am learning a great amount daily here. But I have been here for half a year I believe. You can look at my feedback, and ask anybody on my buddy list if I am credible or not.

I have one teen in mind, a neighborhood guy. He's homeschooled because his parents want to give him the best education they can--he studies through the summer as well.
He has sharpened a knife for many a co-worker of mine with his cheap diamond sharpener, but man; they come the next day saying that he sharpened it sharper than when their's came out of the box!

I also know that he babysits two 8 year old twins, and all I have heard from the parents is praise. He even sharpened their kitchen knives as a surprise for them one night.
He is a very active teen, he'd rather mountain-bike the local trails than play video-games inside with his friends.

He is an active outdoorsman, shooting monthly at some property that his parents have. I would say he spends as much time in the woods as a boy scout, and he is a good varmint hunter.

He has helped me move stuff around the house when I need a hand, and he always greets me whenever he sees me.
He has a cheapie folder that he always has on him, sharpened to shaving sharpness, (tried it myself) but, I imagine it is some crappy steel as I see him oftentimes sharpening it in the sunlight. Some no-namer China import most likely.

He has very high talent in piano, and I know that he recently placed first in a state competition, but his prize money went to saving up for his college. He is also a qualified piano teacher and had 5 students the last time I talked with him. All of that money goes into savings.

I've shown him my small collection of a few Kershaw's and one ZT, and he always asks to see my knife when I have one on me. I asked him once if he planned on getting a nicer knife, and he said that his parents would rather have him save up his money for car insurance. Sadly, his parents do not see the usefulness of a quality knife. He said that he has done extensive searching online in his spare time and that his dream knife would be either a high end Kershaw/ZT or a Benchmade.

He already knows how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble all of my knives faster and better than I can. He is very safe with his knife, and he has shown all of his friends how to handle his when cutting open packages.

His 16th birthday is coming up next week, and I'm sure he would love a quality folder, use it to its full potential, and keep it in good condition. Sorry if I have gone on too long, but I edited this post to add some points that I previously had forgotten.

Thank you!

Yup, what I meant was to a knife lover (like me) this knife has 'history'/character and I like all my knives to have 'history'/character. Knives are meant to be used in my life and I have no safe queens, only spares :)

Don't change the look. You may make it prettier but the thing that give it character will be reduced. Just sharpen it, lube it and wipe it down. By blasting the finish off, the Benchmade logo/mark will be gone! Even if someone magnificently talented managed to re-etch it back, it ain't gonna be original you know!

I recently made my mint in box Spyderco ATR titanium plain edged into a user. the first cut and scratch was heart wrenching, but after a few days it began to show some details. Each scratch showed my character, how I like to cut (more draw instead of push) and what I cut. Now I like it better but it's always difficult in the early stages.

Good luck guys, hope some deserving kid get's it.

Oh and I'd say, please don't change the look on the knife. It's great just how it is, shows character and the usefulness of the knife ;)

Your a lot older than 13 or at least you act older, I wish I could legaly figure out a way to send you a Scout Knife I have:confused: you definately deserve a good Scout Knife.

Sorry for the additional post.

the use on the blade is more og an attraction for most id think it shows just how high quality it really is

I'm a 15 year-old who just discovered high quality knives less than a year ago, but I've been trying to learn everything about them ever since. I lurk here and on the knifemakers forums and I practice sharpening every knife I can, even my relatives kitchen knives. I've always wanted a benchmade, but after reading some of the posts here, I feel that there are others that deserve it more, esp. since I already have a spyderco endura. So yeah, I'm just writing to bow out of the contest...:o

And about the finish, I like the well worn look, but how about asking the winner of this contest what they would like?

Maturity usually comes out of necessity. If you had parents who allowed you to be immature you had to learn that when you got out of the house, but if not then you either learn or you crash and burn. Ive never been a scout myself, but they seem to do a really good job of teaching maturity and responsibility without the whole bad situation part of it.

mrneumman is probably more mature than I am even though hes 7 years my junior; but thats ok with me. Im in no hurry to be selfish and a liar and angry and all of the other negative qualities that come with being an adult.

but being 13 presents MASSIVE legal trouble, in fact, giving the knife to anyone under 18 may put a monkey wrench into this, so I think you should ship the knife to an adult member with a kid and let legal issues go with that, and you should charge them 1 dollar for the knife so that its a sale.

Yes. I am very supprised at how much black finish is left on the blade after the many things it has been through. I'm impressed.

it seems like benchmade has one of the better Black coatings out there, its their own "secret recipe" isnt it?

My son is 10 years old, and, sorry to say it, I have to pass on this one.

No, not because he'd be irresponsible with it, but I think his Dad might take too much of a shine to it himself. Once I get my own Benchmade, I might be able to take the temptation, but until then, he's got to stay one step behind me.

jk904jk,

Just wanted to say that this is a very nice gesture. I commend you for trying to get it to someone who will appreciate it. I would make sure that the recipient is 18 or has a guardian that you can ship to.

Very nice gesture on your part:thumbup:

Unfourtunately I do not qualify.
