Hello fourm,
I am looking to try a different brand of knives. I have been sticking with SOG fixed blades and Zero Tolerance and Spyderco pocket knives and nothing else. But I want to branch out and try some new brands and try out different knives. I have been looking at TOPS knives, Emerson knives, Microtech knives, and Benchmade knives. If I would buy from any of those brands what should be the first knife I buy from them to introduce me to the feal of how they make there knives. If you guys have any other recommendations please comment below. But I am not willing to buy any knives that are $300 dollars or more, so please dont recommend Strider or Chris Reeves. :p

Thanks,
- Stephen

Busse Combat, Swamp Rat Knife Works, and Scrap Yard Knife Co.

There is a place to buy them here and all the companies have knives up for sale right now.

I recomend starting with a Swamp Rat Ratmandu. It is all down hill from there. You will not be disapointed but you will never be the same.

Its fun to spend other people's money.

Benchmade 710, Griptilian or Mini Griptilian
Emerson CQC-7 or -8
Microtech? Looks good to me, and looks spendy, but I've never had my hands on one. See Nutnfancy's youtube reviews.
Kershaw Skyline or Leek, though there are many others to give you the Kershaw flavor
Buck 110 or Vantage (various flavors)
Cold Steel Voyager, American Lawman or Recon 1
Case Peanut, Stockman, Sway Back Jack or whatever flavor suits you

I would say start with the Benchmade 710. Its a real classic, and opens like butter.

Benchmade 710-2 in M390 steel. It's only available from one dealer in that steel. It's the classic Benchmade. It's a great knife with a lot of blade (3.9") in a fairly small package. It carries extremely well.

Hogue makes some fantastic folders and fixed blades and they have two new folder models coming out soon. The build quality on the EX models is superb. Check out BladeHQ's page and look at pages 2-4 on the Hogue Folder pages for the pictures and descriptions - the EX02 and EX03 both look nice - I just hope they offer a standard stonewashed blade instead of all coated. The descriptions state the models may change before production.

I've owned a few microtechs... their knives are great. Their company ethics leave much to be desired. For that reason, I no longer do business with them.

Benchmades are excellent, and you won't go wrong there

I have half a dozen Kershaws, and as folders go, they are my favorite without reservation

I would recommend that you look into Becker knives if you like fixed blades. I have 3, and they are WAY underpriced.

Boker makes a few nice ones. I only have one, but that will change soon.

I'm not a Cold Steel fan, but i will say that they build knives like general dynamics builds tanks...

Busse is out of my price range, but they are top shelf and you can usually sell them for what you paid or more

SwampRat RatManDu (RMD) and the whole line of Beckers for fixed blades. Maybe an ESEE Junglas.

940 or 710 for Benchmade folders.
Kershaw Blur and Leek are classics.
I'd like to try an Emerson, too, at some point.

Stay away from the Hogue EX01, that plastic handle makes the knife dangerously top heavy IMHO.

DPx HEST 2, for the win!!

Yes, Benchmade 710. The 710 is available from different vendors in different blade-steels for different prices. But it's a great knife.

If you like ZT (Big tank like knives) you'll like the BM 810 Contego and 275 Adamas.

Try a Benchmade knife with an Axis Lock.

My recent additions... The Bone Collector , Onslaught, and Bedlam ( my favorite)

Swamp rat knives, scrap yard knives, swamp rat knife works, ontario fixed blades, becker and cold steel to name a few

Agree 710 for benchmade and as for Emerson most of them are similar in materials and price so basically pick a blade style you like and buy that model

Emerson! I'm not personally a huge fan of the Axis lock, so my Benchmade experience is limited. I recently got my first Emerson, a Mini-Commander, and despite being a "mini" it is a freakin' TANK. Not overly long, but just solid as a rock.
