I want your skinny on a new .22

Excellent point.

Also of note, the 981 shoots LRs, longs and short .22's, not all of the Marlin bolts do and none of their current auto loaders can.

But Marlin's 39A lever action shoots them all. I have loaded my with L,LR,Short, CC cap and no problem.

A model 60 can shoot longs although it's very finicky about it. Last time I did it I had a hang up every fourth or so round. Not that I recommend it, but in a pinch it can be done. As for shorts, I never tried it.

I love the 39A, at roughly $500 msrp alot of folks pass on it.

Rumor it is that the little lever can shoot 1" groups at 100 yds., Can't verify that myself, so it may be internet BS.

Caveat - I don't have much expereience with .22 firearm rifles - although I shoot air-rifles in .22 cal.

However some input for scopes - take a look at this budget scope -

Tasco Varmint 2.5-10x42 Mil-Dot

I've found it as low as ~$55
(my search on Froggle.com seems to show either there's been a price increase -
or there are now just fewer low prices for this scope)

The Mil-Dot reticule is very useful - as there is quite a bit of drop in trajectory for airguns - especially for .22 - also the AO adjustable objective - allows me to focus in on closer distances.

I have two of these and have used them for years - the optical quality is surprisingly good for a cheap scope....
and the fact that they've withstood years on springer air-rifles shows they are very shock resistant
- spring-piston air-rifles have very harsh 2-way recoil that can destroy even scopes designed for magnum (firearm) rifles.

cz 453 american or varmit, depending on your taste in barrel weight. Great quality, great accuracy, single set trigger!

edit: ps just because it's a 22 doesn't mean "skimp on the scope." You should still buy the best glass you can afford. I like a fixed 4x for .22s. Think nikon, bushnell 3200 or 4200, leupold, etc.

I have been a .22 nut for a long time but just recently got into the modified 10/22 game. This is the most fun I've had tinkering and shooting in a long time.

My only choice in an auto, is a Ruger 10/22.
Bolt action would be a Ruger 77/22 or a CZ.
Leaver action would be a Marlin 39a.

Here's my tack driver. It will shoot sub 1/4" 5 shot groups (one hole) at 25 yds and sub 1/2" at 50 yds.

OR if you can find one of the reissue Winchester Model 52's somewhere, then you need look no further. Possibly the finest .22 bolt action sporter ever made. CZ makes a pretty darn nice copy of it from what I have heard though. Then go crazy and put something like a fixed power Zeiss Conquest on it:D

Joe, the Models 52's are fine shooting old rifles but not cheap.

I may get a CZ one day but it will not out shoot my 10/22 with the work I've done to it :D
