I was super excited about the new line up and was waiting to buy a whole bunch of CS until I saw just how much $$$ it increased by. Now CS is in direct competition price wise with some really big name knife companies and that's where the problem comes in.
For the same amount of money for a CS with new steel, I can purchase a variety of knives with better fit and finish, made in USA, and much better customer service.
For CS to price their new line in this category they need to step up on quiet a few things. One of which is their severely lacking customer service department.
A month ago I contacted the CS rep here on the forums for a replacement pocket clip. I was instructed to call CS customer service line. Called, explained issue and was given an email to one of the person who "handles" it. Email the said person and ..... NOTHING.
If CS wants to play in the $100+ market, they need to step it up.
My experience with Cold Steel Customer Service was quite different.
I acquired a Vaquero Grande in VG-1, circa 2007/2008 last year.
The knife was a bargain at $40 on craigslist and in NM condition, but the clip, like most, was chipped and the black paint coming off in spots.
I called Cold Steel and they said they still had a few of those clips left and sent me one at no charge and I got it in a few days.
As for pricing, ignore the MSRP -- they will be about 40% less on the secondary market and still a bargain compared to similar knives in most cases.
Pricing on the Black Talon II pre-order is $110.00 -- compare that to the Spyderco Civilian at $150 minimum.
Not only does the Black Talon use better steel, it appears to have better ergonomics and a thumb plate instead of a bird's eye opening on the blade.
Blade length, grind, weight, etc are virtually identical. Plus the CS has the Tri-Ad lock.
I have the Civi and it does not have a provision to put the clip on the other side for left-handers, plus I don't care for the ergonomics.
Admittedly, I haven't yet held a BT II yet, but it looks to have better ergonomics, a clip provision for left-handers and uses CTS-XHP instead of VG-10
I wish I had held off on buying the Civi, but didn't know at the time that CS was coming out with a similar but better knife.
