I was embarrassed to use my knife

I just wanted to share a quick dialogue that took place last weekend. Just for fun. :)

Normally, I do not care too much about what others think, and I am confident in what I do and who I am, but last weekend I had a "moment of weakness".

Please take note.
None of my friends are "knife people". The only ones who carry some kind of knife are a couple guys who carry those keychain knock-off swiss army knives.

So, my friends and I were decorating our friend's house for a party/gathering. A couple off us were busy in one room.
A friend (let's call him Billy) asked me if I had a knife so that he could cut some tape.
Automatically, my hand went to my pocket (to get my knife so that I could had it to him) when another friend (let's call her Emily) across the room spoke up.

(That day was the first time I had seen Emily in years. I have changed quite a bit since then. Naming one change, I never carried a knife back when we were seeing each other more frequently.)

Well, Emily had overheared what Billy had said about a knife. That had bewildered her as she is the quintessential city, party girl.
She asked, "What?! Why would you have a knife?" in a tone that said having a knife was the most riduluous thing and only "dangerous" people, convicts, or crazy people had/carried knives.

Slowly (and in the most casual manner), I dropped my hand/arm away from my pocket and said, "Oh, I don't have one," even though I had used it to cut some plastic some 15 minutes ago in the kitchen...

That was such a random "moment of weakness." I like to be truthful and I am usually never afraid of judgement from others, but hey~ there are always times when we diverge from normalcy.

Whew. So many words for just two sentences spoken... :o

This probably never happened to you guys, right?
I'm guessing you are all tough guys who never ever care about other peoples' thoughts :D
I had a chance to help educated others about knives, but I just let it be :(

Well, I hope you all had a nice weekend. :)

I just make fun of people like that.

As for "why would someone have a knife??!!!!" I dunno, maybe for the reason he asked for one? She doesn't sound all too bright.

Well, if this was the first time you were "confronted" or challenged about having a knife, I understand. However it wouldn't be a bad idea to think up a few good preformed arguments for the next time this happens. As knife owners, we have a responsibility to help society revert back to its old "normal" frame of mind.

I have had such conversations with a number of people, and I'd say that out of everyone who says something like that to me, and then I tried to reason with them, 25% still rejected the notion that a knife is a necessary tool, about 50% conceded my reasoning and just let it drop, and another 25% took up my offer to give them one of my beaters to try out.

And to date, nobody that I have given a knife to has ever decided that it was not a useful tool to EDC, rather every time I run into them, they proudly tell me everything they have used it for.

Well, it might have been "a moment of weakness" but I would rather call it adaptation to circumstanses.

I have done it a lot, wanted to help to cut something but thinking a few steps ahead and decided it wasn´t worth it.

Still waiting for that huge lottery win that will make me filthy rich so I don´t have to care about what other think.

I understand the "responsibility" :)
I usually try to help teach non-knife people and try ease them into thinking it is "okay" to have/carry a knife (through light conversation, the occasional debate of logics, and action).

In this situation, however, I had just kind of a brain, no, action fart?

She doesn't sound all too bright.

As for "Emily", she is actually pretty smart. (She graduated from UCLA and is currently studying to become a lawyer).
It's just that we grew up learning that knives were weapons.

I usually just respond with "Real men carry knives" or "Because you never know when you'll need one." Only happened once or twice. Just about every guy down here has at least a pocketknife on them. Only people that ever acted funny about it are usually northerners.

I get that, and it helps if you have a somewhat rehearsed argument.

Well there is smart, and then there is smart :p

If someone thinks that you are odd for using tools, perhaps you should reevaluate your relationship with said person.

Most things logical can be explained logically.

However.

*Never expect that just because something is indeed logical, that others will understand it.

if she's so smart, how can she NOT recognize the utility of a knife? It's not like there was violently escalating situation going on. Just one of those thousands of menial tasks knives are useful for...

What kind of knife was it? Was it some comically large folding pocket sword or ultra-tactical stabinator? :)

On one level you should feel free to use your knife whenever you want, but...

you might want to be carrying a knife that you always feel comfortable to use, you know?

Seems like you have two choices: 1) not care, or 2) carry a knife that you are confident will not make you feel embarassed.

I wish you would have pulled out a ZT 0560, flicked it open, and yelled, "I've got my small one on me!" That would have been hilarious!!!

Actually, I am quite proud of the fact that I carry knives. In fact, I may go out of the way just to have an excuse to pull it out and start a conversation over it. The only times that I am reserved is when I'm at work or traveling.

I do get people who are put off by it, but that's great because it gives me a chance to debunk the negative stereotypes that knife carriers have. Knives are useful for a multitudes of things, killing is actually a very VERY miniscule part of knives these days. If someone wants to kill someone, there are much better weapons out there designed for it.

"Oh, I don't have one,"

Well, I get those questions also, since I always carry a knife and a GLOCK. It's too bad, IMHO, that you told her that. If you care about her, you're either gonna be PW or you will have to educate her. I consider my knife a utility-device only. My gun is defensive. If you feel that way also, there's no reason you should feel queasy about carrying a knife. I use my knife at least once a day, and so do most of us who carry one.

My wife has had a concealed-weapons permit for the last 20 years or so. She knows there are BG's out there. She is also appreciative that I have a knife whenever she needs something cut or a package opened.
