I was embarrassed to use my knife

Lets read the thread so that we keep on topic, folks...... and keep any political commentary in the appropriate forum.

I'm up for a sticky on "Why i carry a knife".

Isn't there a really great piece someone wrote about this? "I carry a pen even if i don't use it every day, i wear a watch etc etc....."

You can also tell any Emily type that comes along to 'take a look around you, almost everything you see has been cut in some way'.

I didn't assume anything. All kinds of people date all kinds of people.

I didn't say you did, but I lumped your post in with those others who had assumed. Your later post seemed to imply that the possibility of the OP being female hadn't occurred to you.

That's a good point. Whether it's a knife or saw (or whatever) that does the cutting, most materials require some sort of edged tool to refine, shape, divide, etc.

I just read the all posts, and *whew* was that long!
I didn't know that knives would rouse such strong emotion...

Nice catch ;)
I have just a couple friends that work in film. (That day there were about 6 or 7, I believe.)
No one big. Just some trying to make it in the industry.

And, no, I do not work in the film industry. I've only worked on one movie (as a PA); an independent film with a small budget (only a couple million (yes, that's considered "small budget")).

Where do you work? I'm a 1st AC and I work in Vancouver BC. Most camera assistants, grips and electrics carry a stanley knife or box cutter, but few carry a nice folder. I always have a spyderco or benchmade on my belt, and often an OTF for fun. plus SOG multitool.

Well there's your problem.

Can't say that I've ever been in that situation before... All my friends know me as the crazy knife collector, and I'm okay with that :D

Can't say that about all lawyers. One of my best friends is getting ready to leave for law school. She's always carried a one hand opener of some kind. She said the other day she was bummed that she probably wouldn't be able to carry any of them on campus. More due to perception rather than school rules. She really took a shine to my peanut so she has one of her very own on the way with her name engraved on the blade. I think she'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

I just wanted to share a quick dialogue that took place last weekend. Just for fun. :)

Normally, I do not care too much about what others think, and I am confident in what I do and who I am, but last weekend I had a "moment of weakness".

Please take note.
None of my friends are "knife people". The only ones who carry some kind of knife are a couple guys who carry those keychain knock-off swiss army knives.

So, my friends and I were decorating our friend's house for a party/gathering. A couple off us were busy in one room.
A friend (let's call him Billy) asked me if I had a knife so that he could cut some tape.
Automatically, my hand went to my pocket (to get my knife so that I could had it to him) when another friend (let's call her Emily) across the room spoke up.

(That day was the first time I had seen Emily in years. I have changed quite a bit since then. Naming one change, I never carried a knife back when we were seeing each other more frequently.)

Well, Emily had overheared what Billy had said about a knife. That had bewildered her as she is the quintessential city, party girl.
She asked, "What?! Why would you have a knife?" in a tone that said having a knife was the most riduluous thing and only "dangerous" people, convicts, or crazy people had/carried knives.

Slowly (and in the most casual manner), I dropped my hand/arm away from my pocket and said, "Oh, I don't have one," even though I had used it to cut some plastic some 15 minutes ago in the kitchen...

That was such a random "moment of weakness." I like to be truthful and I am usually never afraid of judgement from others, but hey~ there are always times when we diverge from normalcy.

Whew. So many words for just two sentences spoken... :o

This probably never happened to you guys, right?
I'm guessing you are all tough guys who never ever care about other peoples' thoughts :D
I had a chance to help educated others about knives, but I just let it be :(

Well, I hope you all had a nice weekend. :)

I've had this happen to me a few times and I'll say like an above poster mentioned and say I carry one for this exact reason or give them a smart ass remark. But what is kind of weird is you used my name, Billy, and my girlfriends name in your story. I can hear the twilight zone music playing right now...

That would have been the time that i would have pulled out the biggest and scariest knife i had on me just to scare someone.

If you had a screwdriver I doubt anyone would even think twice, and yet a screwdriver is equally as deadly as most EDC knives and there are less uses for it.
