Hey all,

I was on the phone calling all of the local dealers inthe area to see if any of them had and Spydies in stock. I found 1 store that had a couple, one of which was the Military model. Since I am also interested in the Police model, I asked if he had any of those in. He quickly replied that he did not have any and that he could not buy them anymore. He follows by tellingme that they are illegal to sell and buy in the states. Of course I ask him why and he tells me that they found out that it can cut Kevlar so they outlawed it. I tried to explain to him that the edge is the same on the Police as it is on any other Spyderco. He would not budge, even when I told him I could buy them all day long on the internet. The only thing he added was that he knew they were banned and he couldn't buy them but it is possible that they are only banned in West Virginia, but he thought it was everywhere.
I hung up and thought that was just about the dumbest thing I had ever heard. It sounds so stupid that one wonders how something like that come about.
Have any of you heard anything to substantiate that story? Are there states that ban the Police because it can cut Kevlar? I checked the WV Code and there is no mention of Spyderco at all.
What do you think?

Sounds like a big ol' load of CRAP. I wear kevlar on a daily basis and I can tell you that any sharp edge will cut it. Kevlar is designed to prevent blunt force trauma, not edged attacks.

Its bullsh!t, plain and simple. Like far far too many brick and mortar or gun show knife sellers, its a bullsht story they tell to explain for not having something in-stock. Or who knows, maybe its a bullsht story they got told by their distributor and now they believe.
One way or the other, its nonsense.
Kevlar can be cut by a lot of things, it can also be pierced by a lot of things, like knives. The Spyderco police isnt the only one. Cold Steel was doing it with their knives in the 80's

The BS meter is high on this one, it would've been major news in cutlery circles. He probably didn't want to go through the hassle of back ordering.

He may get all of his products (or at least Spyderco products) through one distributor who doesn't handle that model. He may have received BS from his distributor.

A few months ago, I was told by a very reputable knife dealer that Texas would now be allowing legal carry of auto knives, under it's CHL laws. Since I have a CHL, I try to stay up on the law changes, but this one really didn't pass the sniff test.

I called the Texas DPS Handgun division and spoke to one of their attorney's, and asked if this were true. She put this one to rest very quickly: NO. In like fashion, I'd contact Spyderco. This is news that they would be quite familiar with, if true. geegee

he tells me that they found out that it can cut Kevlar so they outlawed it.

LOL! Any knife can cut Kevlar. If you run a search you'll find a number of members have pierced and slashed Kevlar vests to pieces. Anything sharp can do it. Serrations tend to hang up in any kind of clothing if they aren't razor sharp, but even a serrated edge can cut Kevlar easily if it's sharp enough.

Hey, teflon coated bullets go right through kevlar, too...hahaha:rolleyes:
World's full of people like this, and the tv-based reality they live in.

BS is right!

I had several boxes of 10mm Auto ammunition marked 'police only.' My wife just bought a can of pepper spray (for dogs when she rides) and it's marked 'for police use.'

Lots of my friends are cops or agents. They come to my house, and we go into the gun room lots of times. No one, and I mean NO one, has ever questioned my possessions.

omg, the police model being outlawed cause it can cut kevlar...
rofl, that is one of the most absurd things i have heard

This may be a sign to start doing business with another merchant. That guy is either ignorant or a liar, neither of which is very reassuring.

Just plain stupid. Should say he don't have them or don't carry them instead of laying out a load like that. I live on the WV border and I am Police Officer and I know thats just a load for sure.

Drop this guy like a bad habit. Whether he's just stupid or ignorant, you don't want to do business with him.

He is partially true. It's the poilice model with silver dipped blade...Courts found an unfair advantage over werewolves!

Are we allowed to say bull **** on this forum?

For your own knowledge, there is a Forum here dedicated to Spyderco. It's a great place to get Spyderco questions answered. Sometimes Sal Glesser, their President, even replies.

Yeah, we can make excuses for this guy and say stuff like, "Maybe he got this story from his distributor," as though that absolves him of his obligation to THINK FOR ONE MEASLY SECOND ABOUT THE STORY and come to the realization that it couldn't possibly make sense or be true.

A knife dealer who doesn't realize how easily sharp things can penetrate kevlar?? This guy is an argument for euthanizing the mentally impaired. (Not that I support that: just that he's an argument for it.)

It's not surprising that none of you know about this little-known "armor piercing blade law" designed to protect our law enforcement folks, but only in jurisdictions beginning with vowels and on alternating days of the week (this keeps the criminals confused).

Just like the special "police only" doughnuts at Krispy Kreme, with reformulated ingredients like more active fiber coatings and flab-penetrating vitamins for those public servants who have to sit long hours in cruisers yet participate in occasional foot chases.

I can buy these high performance doughnuts because I have a "Security Officer" special ID; that's how I know about them.

I'm also have my PhD in "Security Nutrition" from MIT, and I advise the "President's Commission on Homeland Security Bowel Obstructions" in my free time. You all are lucky I have the time to share my expertise here. :)
