i'm typing with my one weak hand, so please forgive lack of capitalization.

last thursday i was driving into town to meet my wife for lunch when a truck ran into me (his fault.) they had to cut the car apart to get me out, and i was unconscious for twenty minutes. i woke up as they were putting me into the ambulance. somehow i had the presence of mind to ask the attendants if there was a cop on the scene, told him i was legally carrying, and asked him to remove the handgun from my front pocket.

since i'm late for our lunch date, my wife starts calling my phone. she tries many several times and finally the cop picks up my phone from the car floor and answers it. he tells her what happened, blindly and ignorantly says i'll be okay, and asks her to come to the scene to pick up the gun. he tells her that doing so will save both me and him a lot of trouble in my getting it returned.

the ambulance takes me to the hospital, where i'm immediately loaded onto a helicopter for a life-flight to morgantown, wv.

by air, it took 15 minutes. by car, it took my wife a bit more than an hour. upon her arrival, and after the expected terrified greetings, she leaned down to my ear and whispered, "i found your (victorinox) farmer (with scissors.")

this all happened last thurs. i was released four days later on easter sun.

broken elbow is wired together. the break severed my "funny bone" nerve and is proving quite annoying. in a cast from my left shoulder to end of my thumb. (i'm left handed, btw.) my cheek is broken. they were going to put in a plate, but it all popped back together. i have a huge gash that exposed my head anatomy. it cut into my ear canal. also cut my saliva gland in half. so far, i can hear just fine and am still making spit. i have pressure and headaches. hard to think and articulate but hopefully will improve. so far, left eye brow doesn't work. i get really dizzy easily, and stumble sometimes when i walk. but hope that will get better when the ear canal heals.

throughout it all i've been upbeat and positive, and know this is something i'm just going to have to deal with for a while.

i just need to think of a cooler story for how i got all the scars. :)

That is a pretty crazy story. I’m glad you’re ok. It’s funny how state of mind gets when you’re injured isn’t it? I was hit by a car 2 years ago. I wasn’t in a car I was skateboarding. (Stupid move for a late 30 something I know but whatever) I woke up on the ground feeling very peaceful... When they were loading me in the ambulance I remember joking with the medics even though my right leg was completely broken in half at the tibia and fibula. I had other injuries and was in and out of consciousness as well. My wife and my mother-in-law show up in the ER and then I remember they had to put me out to try and get my leg set so they could x-ray me and my wife said I was having a whole conversation with her mom and telling her I loved her (she drives me completely insane) even though I was out. :D Everything after that was a blur for a few days as I had to have a few surgeries to repair everything. Anyway, what I’m getting at, is the human body is a miracle in itself. It’s amazing what we can go through and come out of. Thinking back at it I cringe but at the time I remember being completely at peace with whatever was going to happen.

Scott, glad to hear that you made it!

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Get well soon

I'm so glad you are alive and mending, medical science is amazing, but nothing beats a positive individual, you'll heal quickly!

Seriously, I'm glad your wife (kids?) still have you.

Get well! You did good so far, keep it up.
(That was good luck finding a cooperative cop!)

Smoke sent for a speedy recovery!

ummm...I think you are down to 8 lives.

Sorry about the mishap and glad to see you are still alive and recovering. I had an incident almost 2 years ago- left my house on Sat. morning on my bicycle, 10 miles away a Toyota tries to remove my face, I made it home 3 days later. My face is not too bad but my back will never recover fully. Some parts of my recovery were slow but I did continue to make progress. Now my face doesn't scare little kids any more than it did before the accident.

Prayers sent for a speedy recovery. It sounds like you are lucky to be alive!

Wow.

It is amazing how fragile life really is. Prayers for quick and full recovery.

Prayers sent for complete recovery, Scott.
Listen to your doctor(s).
Also agree with what Esav said about the helpful leo.
Glad you're safe. :)

The gods favor a man who owns a Vic Farmer with scissors.
Speedy recovery to you.

It really sucks when life happens so hard all at once. Keep the positive attitude and you'll recover so much better. Remember you still have your life, wife, gun and knife. Good luck man.

thanks, everyone, for the thoughts and prayers. they are all greatly appreciated! i'm hoping this will all just be a memory in a few months.

the docs wanted me up and moving as soon as i was able. as i was walking the halls, i couldn't help but see all the other patients in their rooms. i was glad to be me.
