I was ohhhh so close to doing it.

I must say - mine came shavin-sharp. Like WOW. Not the almost-mirror finish of old Basics, but dang good.

I would not strip it for a long LONG time. Like years from now if u still have it. That's if u haven't already stripped it ;-p

Our boy here can barely hold on to a knife long enough to call it owned, hoes he gonna wait years b4 stripping it.:D;)

looks good as it is. has character.

Did you just use a 80 grit belt on that edge, or do you finish it off with sandpaper/mousepad?

lol, i think the edge would look like a saw if he used an 80 grit. probably used something finer than a 10 micron belt.

I'm going to beat it a bit more I think before stripping it.

Rich, you think I'm gonna screw it up? :D

LOL@ keeping a knife long enough to even call it owned, oh so true.

As for the edge, I start the grinding at 80 grit to set the bevel, then after that I work my way up through 10 different belts, jumping from a 15 micron, to 1 micron diamond loaded leather belt to .5 micron diamond loaded leather. Sometimes I use green compound too, but I'm on a diamond kick.

Aww, that's too bad Mike, you really should have stripped her. I know what you mean about the coating wear. Mine bothered me enough to do my first strip job.

I like mine stripped and I don't have a belt sander, but I did use an 80 grit 3M automotive sanding disc with their mousepad backed drill mount system just to clean up a few spots and remove the decarb. I wasn't going for looks so much as function and with all of those shiny spots glaring at me in the sun I figured I might as well have the whole thing that way. A piece of the disc came off in one spot from cleaning up the choil which is why the funny scratches are there, but they only show up at that angle and the original flat grind scratches were much worse, yet still shiny. All ready for food prep now! :D

Tim, that looks great! Congrats.:cool:

Crap! I was gonna do it to be the first, now its pointless.

:D I hear that.

If I had a spare minute to pick mine up from steelnut, it was going to get stripped immediately. Lacking a useful flat platen, I was going to clean up the flat grind with ScotchBrite wheel.

Thanks guys, I still think that any of you considering it should definitely strip it. ;)

Nope, I don't think u will screw it up. I just remember hearing u say it could be a little thicker at the spine and have more blade width. Stripping it and grinding it down would do the opposite :)

Right???

Because it's a full flat grind, I wouldn't really need to grind anything off as I won't have to deal with dimples etc.. It'd be a quick grind against the platen of a finishing belt or two and it'd be done.

I can't wait to see the finished pics:thumbup:
