I didn't think that I had anything of real worth to give away when I hit my 1000th post, but I was wrong, I found some stuff the other day.

What I have is a couple of extra copies of two different books, "The Wonder of Knifemaking" by MS Wayne Goddard and "Knife Talk II" by MS Ed Fowler; I have steel, I have some handle material, I have handle pins/fasteners, and some knowledge, although I'm no expert on anything.

A while back forum member "mneedham" posted a question about who has tried their hand at knifemaking. I'd like to give the above items to a person who really does want to try their hand at knifemaking. Perhaps you've thought about it and wanted to try but don't know where to start.

Please only post if you are serious about wanting to try your hand at making a knife. I'll provide the winner with as much support/knowledge as I can as well as the materials as listed above. Shop Talk is a great place to ask questions as well. Of course, you'll have to post pics of the finished knife/knives! :D

This is open to all members, but I'm only posting this here in Wilderness & Survival Skills. I'll leave it open for a while, then have someone (who knows nothing about this) pick a number at random. All you have to do is say I'm in and provide a brief statement of why you want to make a knife!

Good luck all! -Matt-

Im in, I am very talented w/ wood working, but have never had any experiance with metals. Sounds like a great idea, I would love to see what I could do with some steel....

Thanks Matt

I've done some customizing and I'm currently learning the ropes on restoring old slipjoints.

My current setup is just a bench grinder, a Craftsman 4X32 with a modified 6" disk (modified to accept 3M HookIt II and interface pads for convex edge work, and so I can use paper ranging from 80 grit to 3000 grit), some files, dremel tool, and some other random tools.

If you think the above mentioned stuff will work for a beginer, then please put my name/number in the hat.

Thanks,
Chris

i have tried a little bit of knifemaking, but so far am not pleased with the results, i have a very small setup, a grinder some files and sanding paper, come from a small oil town that has absolutely nothing in the way of making knifes, and would love a good knifemaking book.

my plan for knifemaking is to make a expert knife with my son (hes 2 months) when he is old enough (8-10) so i got to get on that hahaha

im not to sure what we are supose to write here... but im down with it.:D

I'm in...While I've come very close to finding my perfect knife...eventually making my own seems to be the only sure fire way to get it right....Also it's an entirely new level to self subsistence. Using a knife while in the bush i one thing...making one and than using it well...Well that't the real mcCoy

I'm pretty much in Riley's boat I think, I'm not sure I'll ever see my perfect knife unless I make it. I'd love to be in!

I've tried handle work before (not entirely satisfied with the results) but want to work with some steel.

I started getting interested in knifemaking a few months ago. I am currently working on my first blade, but would love the help of a book by someone like Wayne Goddard. I have used nothing but hand tools (hack saw, files) so it is a slow going process - draw filing takes a lot of time and work. Anyway, I'm in.

you know i have been considering knife making alot lately. i have seen some of the custom in the knife makers for sale forums and i just think it is awesome. a great way to fill my time away from work and to relax and learn something new. i am looking to get a belt griner to sharpen my knives, adn making knives would jsut be the next step. i know i had an absolute blast making ym enzo the way i wanted it, but to make a knife from scraps wopuld be the shiznit. so yeah, i guess im in:D

Id love to get into knife making. I just finished up my finals, so I will have time this summer to see where I can get. Ive been thinking about doing trying for a while, so I'm in for sure!

Congrats to RescueRiley! He is the winner of the give-away!

Just to let everyone know, your responses to why you wanted to make a knife were not considered whether or not you won or lost. That was to satisfy my own curiosity. My co-worker Shawna, picked a number at random, leaving out my posts #1,#8,and #14.

RescueRiley if you can, please PM me or E-mail me when you get this.

Thanks to all who participated! -Matt-

I'm in.

I have made two knives so far... if you want to call it that. Both were out of files. I have collected knives since I was 5 and last year decided to try my hand at making them. this website has been wonderful in helping. I have the plans to make the NWKMG but haven't put it together yet - still collecting parts. I would learn to sharpen my skills and learn more about what to and not to do.

Congrats RR!! Good giveaway GreaseMan, very generous of you.
Thanks SP! I wish I could have involved more people, as so many great people on Bladeforums have helped me in one way or another. I'd like to do this again in the future perhaps. -Matt-

I'm sorry jawilder, but the contest has been closed. Keep collecting those parts and you'll soon have yourself a NWKMG and life will be good! As far as skills and learning what to do and not to do...ask lots of questions, be as good a student as you can be, practice, and keep a positive attitude! -Matt-
