I will never use this knife

Click bait apology first followed by my intent. Do you have any knives that for whatever reason will never be used? Ergos not what you expected, changes in preferences, dislike the person who gave it to you, political stance on country of origin, whatever floats your boat? I have about 50 knives I want to start moving for various reasons. When I bought them, I was excited at first! But now…..Meh. They are gonna collect dust so I should try to get some money out of them so I can spend it on knives I will like better. My daughter tried to explain “girl math” to me lately. Not sure if this qualifies, but feel free to ask someone in your life if you are not familiar with this term.

For example. My LT Wright Frontier Valley. I was so excited to get this. Hard to find, Ohio made (Go Bucks) and an internet darling. Not my preferred steel, small in hand, paid too much to actually use, and ready to move on from it. Nothing wrong with it, but I WILL NEVER USE IT.

Do you have a knife you own and will never use?

AT FIRST I TYPED, "Only knives that I have collected inadvertently, not that I have purchased myself." And then . . .

I thought of the Cold Steel plastic knives only one of which I ever carried (accidentally into a non-permissive environment, if you can believe it), and a Hackmann folding puukko (apocryphally called the "CIA balisong") which I love but will likely sit unused as part of my Finnish collection. I did buy these.

Much more numerous are the quite good knives which I no longer appreciate as much as I did when I first purchased them and which have faded in my assessment as I have found better tools: e.g. Becker BK-15 now replaced by Peltonen M95, Buck 110 aluminum frame drop point S30v just isn't the cutting machine I thought it would be. These will get sold at some point in the near future as I pare down the collection through döstädning, Swedish for "death cleaning" (look for that heading in the Exchange this Spring).

Unless it was a gift or inherited from a family member, I don't keep it if I'm not going to use it.

Currently, beyond knives passed down from my grandfathers, my only non-user is the XL Hotdog Boker Kalashnikov my brother got me for Christmas.
No offense if this is something you like, but the bananas, chili peppers, and dessert colorway seem to be a trending gimmick. I wear grey or black t-shirts exclusively, so I'm just not a flashy person.

I think my most notable example was an Al Mar SERE 2K. It was a very fine knife, and checked every box I had. Then came the fateful night, I had,,,ahem....used an outhouse. As I fastened my pants I heard an unexpected "PLOP!" Sure 'nuff, there's my beloved Al Mar in the bottom of a porta can. I looked at it....and walked away. And then thought about it. And thought about it. some more. Finally, I found a trash bag, put my arm in it up to my shoulder, reached in, and fished it out. I immediately dropped it in a pool of hand sanitizer.

I took it home that morning, disassembled it, and left it in a tub of bleach while I slept. That did not satisfy me. So, then I put it in a pool of alcohol for three days. Still didn't help. Put it in an industrial parts cleaner for a day. Nope. I loved that knife, but just couldn't quit seeing where it had been. I eventually sold or traded it. I'm pretty sure I told the new owner the history of it.

Funny story, but sad that you basically lost a favorite knife.

I have several antique knives, so they do not get used, and some that I bought are pretty things. I am at a place where if a knife isn't one of those two things it is used or sold.

Recently, I satisfied a 32-year curiosity with acquisition of the queen of all safe queens - a 1993 Boker Delta ceramic. These were utterly unattainable for me when they came out, but it seems to be a popular non-user to get rid of these days, thus I was able to capitalize. Sure enough, good as advertised, inexhaustable sharpness, not a speck of rust, lightweight... What do I do with it? Can't drop it, don't twist it, never pry with it, keep away from frozen foods. It does look nice, but its only permissable use is to slice things that could just as easily be torn neatly and with minimal effort. I looked at it, polished it, fiddled with it over a few days, then put it away.

I really did like it, but it was one of...three or four that I had owned. I wasn't always very smart back then (And don't claim to be now) but I basically got bored and restless, and traded off darn near everything that wasn't tied down. Sometimes just a matter of days or weeks. My wife wonders how she survived that time period, but I wasn't quite THAT stupid...

Well, let's see... I collect Italian Stilettos knives (not high heels).:)

They're not really good for anything except to look at and I have more of them than I'll admit to.
I got these two last week.

You'll be unpleasantly surprised to know that a collection of high end (pun intended) Italian stiletto heels would be much easier for your heirs to sell at a profit. What a hobby we've chosen 😂

I do have knives that I never use, but now I am getting older I find myself being nostalgic about things from my past. I find myself thinking "I wonder what happened to this or that?" or remembering something that I used to have and find myself wishing I could see it again. This has made me careful about getting rid of stuff. I guess good or bad, it is like getting rid of a personal piece of history. An example is my "survivor" 80's survival knife. It pretty much sucks and I have no plans to use it, but wouldn't get rid of it for anything, because it brings back the memories of my youth.

Yes, I've heard .... especially the ones with the red soles ... or are those French, I'm not sure.
