I wish Spyderco would stop putting hole in their fixed blades.

If you do manage to break your Spyderco fixed blade, you're probably abusing it. If you do manage to break the knife, it probably won't break at the hole.... Just use the knife, man!

I agree. A hole on fixed blade does nothing good. Even worse on the kitchen knives. No function, just food getting in the hole, which you need to clean really well. I think it is some kind of legal issue.

off topic but I freaking love your avatar!
FO2 for life :D

yep the hole on the fixed blades and autos doesnt cause any real functional issues......but i think its silly as well. trademarked needs okay, but i dont like it either.

its a nonissue to me as im not much of a fan of most of spydercos fixed blades. often very pricey for what you get. some are great and priced decently......others not so much. spyderco folders are where the company excels. until that changes i mostly go elsewhere for fixed blades.

Never had an issues with any of my Spyderco fixed blades, but I can see that it would bother some people.

I got a Bill Moran... and you know what?? The hole is very small. On a Bushcraft it's a little bit bigger. My blade are still top shape!

I have processed lots of game with my fixed Spydies and used a Mule in the kitchen a ton and I have no issues with the hole. It can get a little crud stuck in there but it isn't hard to clean out at all. I don't see the problem. I have batoned with my Schempp Rock and my Bradley Bowie in ways that they were never meant to be batoned and they didn't break. The Schempp Rock is currently living in my wood shed on kindling duty. I have also used a few of the Mules quite hard without breaking one. I have read that Spyderco has a calculation for the minimum cross section of the blade at the hole. I understand where your concern comes from but I assume this is something that Spyderco has thought through so I don't worry about it. The crud in the hole is a different story but I can live with it. Their kitchen knives are marketed to commercial kitchens where sanitation is the top priority which I assume is why the hole was omitted on them. Anyway, don't fear the hole. ;)

Gratuitous fixed Spydie pics. :D

True that! I am blessed with tons of giant grey squirrels around here. We are only allowed 4 per day here and that is fairly easy to do. One per person is all it takes with these guys. There is an abundance of beech and oak around my house. :D Fat and happy squirrels.

Great pictures! This thread now has some value :)
It is a personal aesthetic thing. I don't even notice anymore unless the hole gets gunked up and needs a bit more attention when cleaning, but if I like the knife the hole is not going to be a deal breaker (or blade breaker). For the fixed blades with thumb opening sized holes, they do have a function! You can hang them from a hook or nail to keep them off the floor/ground :)
This thread reminds me I need a Schempp Rock :)

Never bothered me at all personally. :)

Doesn't hurt performance from what I have seen.

I like the holes in the blades. I respect the reason that they are there and I would do the same if I were Spyderco. Plus if they ever get gunk in them I just take a pipe cleaner with oil on it and clean the hole. Takes like 10 seconds.

Well....not 10 seconds if you have gunk in the blade like Bearfacedkiller. LOL. That's a lot of gunk on that Mule bro. Do you keep it like that or was that just after field dressing and it needed cleaned?

Even though I'll never really like it I can trick myself into accepting it when looking at it as a trademark. I wish it would look cooler though.
A Mercedes would look sad without a star on its hood. A knife without a simple hole however not so much. Why not pep it up on the fixed knifes and fill the hole with a spiderweb or use the hole as the body of a spider and engrave legs and head etc around it?

That was after boning an elk out 3 miles in the woods, after backpacking the almost 300 pounds of meat back to my truck in four trips, after making another trip in for my camping gear, after driving the 5 hours home, after spending most of two days processing and vacuum sealing, after going back to work for a few days and then finally after unpacking all my hunting gear and trying to get it all cleaned up. I usually keep my knives much much cleaner than that but a solo backpacking elk hunt is a ton of work for one person and it took a while to get to it. It was one of the best hunting trips of my life. :D

I enjoyed your pictures, sounds like an awesome hunt.

It doesn't bother me, but it is Spyderco's trademark and I don't see it going anywhere unless a whole lot of people complain about it.
