Hi, all.
I was just wondering what your limit is as far as what you will not buy. While it's very hard to say I'm never going to buy a knife that is..... I think I can securely say I'm never going to buy a knife that has that artificially dyed multicolored wood for a handle or scales. I think it's cheesy.

I will not buy any knife from the little plastic bucket at the gas station.

Hmm, the infamous "pakkawood" from Frost Cutlery. Is there ANYTHING uglier?
Nope! No S&W knives for me either.
but 4th,
I've got to admit, I bought a knife frome the little plastic bucket.
It's a little chinese knockoff of a Delica, cost me 3.99 and it's on a key chain with a magnesium fire starter in one of the pockets of my Concealment vest.
I'll probably never need it, so why spend the money for a real Delica when all I want is a flint striker? *A very sharp, serrated flint striker!*
But I DO draw the line at the nasty Frost Cutlery junk.

See?
I've got standards!
LOL

I'm now leaning on only custom knives.

I would never buy knives from guys that sell them on tv and sound like used car salesmen.

Where to begin;

No Frost Cutlery or United Cutlery

No Zytel or other plastic handles (unless rehandling is in their future

)

No serrated blades

No Krayton or rubbery handles when other alternatives exist

OK, that's enough venting for today.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

Hey PhilL, I seen my custom stag stanley knife there in your photo album you made me .... was that a cheap stag imitation?

No United or Frost for me either. I actually won't ever buy a Spyderco, I think they're ugly (except for one but I can't remember the name). No recurved blades either.

Knives with hugely ineffective rip-saw teeth on the spine (shudder). Knife-like objects from Franklin Mint. Stop the insanity!

note: This should not be construed as a knock against all knives with teeth on the spine. I refer only to those where the sole function of the teeth is (apparently) to look cool.

I won't buy any knife with a "less than completely comfortable" handle. If you pick up a knife and it doesn't feel perfectly comfortable, putting 4 to 5 hours of work in with such will not make it more comfortable! In fact, it will raise blisters, make your hand ache, and you just plain won't do it twice. Most handles, yes, I said most, will not be comfortable in a moderate to long use situation. If you want to see how comfortable a handle can be, pick up a boning knife at a meat packer. If a knife isn't as comfortable as that, it won't get any better with use.

No partial serrations. No thumb ramps. No blade coatings. No holes in the blade, except a tapped hole for the thumb stud.

Hey, thumb ramps and coatings each have their use. Bad thumb ramps / bad coatings are a problem but so are bad _____ (fill in your favorite feature).

I will never buy cheap rip-offs of maker`s unique designs. The whistle- neck knife made by S+W is a blatent rip-off of Darrel Ralphs design, and it has a dadgum WHISTLE built into it for adding insult to injury! You`d think Smith and Wesson would be a little sensitive after being ripped off by Taurus. How about those $15.00 Pardue/Benchmade spike copies? Won`t even make it to a pocket before accidentally opening. Friends don`t let friends buy ripoffs.( Okay, breathing deeply, calming down...)

I will not buy:

Anything S&W
From a dealer that sells anything S&W
Knives that are only made as collectibles (if they weren't good enough to be sold as regular knives, why would I want a collection of them?)
Those wierd green things from Remington (yeah, they have 1095 blades, but...)
Pink Spyderco's
Knives with handles made from "genuine artificial" anything
And no Sebenza's! [just to cause trouble

Attention: Some assembly may be required. Batteries not included.

Actually, my list was in addition to a bunch of other things already posted here... I won't even buy knife mags with S&W products advertised, for example, nor would I purchase from dealers who sell their knives.

I always avoid "surgical" steel. Also 420 and almost any knife made by united cutlery. I purchased a night stick with a blade in it, the first swing at a cardboard box and the blade fell off.
