Okay, I've got to stand up for Gerber, the EZ out is an awesome inexpensive knife, and it is super light, and it's got a great feel, and a great shape, and it's great....

Okay, something else I avoid is plastic linerlock knives. I've noticed that the blade tends to scrape up the plastic on the inside and it just doesn't open and close that well, too much friction, I guess. Lockbacks are okay.

I've got to admit, I bought a knife frome the little plastic bucket.
It's a little chinese knockoff of a Delica, cost me 3.99 and it's on a key chain with a magnesium fire starter in one of the pockets of my Concealment vest.
I'll probably never need it, so why spend the money for a real Delica when all I want is a flint striker? *A very sharp, serrated flint striker!*

I would lose the cheap knife and cut off a piece of hacksaw blade for this. Grind the teeth off and you can even sharpen part of it if you want to use it to make magnesium shavings. Overall, the package is much smaller.

Enough humor for me. Ditto on the S&W. I hate their autos, their knives suck, and I will not buy their revolvers because they are SELLOUTS!!!

I avoid Gerbers as well, cheap multi-tools (had one that hurt my hand to hold firmly, let alone use), and most anything that can be found at Wally World or KKK-mart. (not meant to offend K-mart employees or customers, but around here, it is just as dangerous as the local housing projects).

One thing I don't avoid is cheap balisongs. Fun to prcatice with, inexpensive to replace, and so dull they don't cut you is you close it wrong.

Is there a whole lot of narrowminded bigotry in this thread or not?

I have been disappointed with a few (well....QUITE a few) knives from a number of well known manufacturers .
Gerber, Al Mar, AG Russell, Case....to mention some. I, also, have knives by all of the above that I like a lot.
Just means I will be more careful when considering their stuff in the future....definitely not chucking any babies out with any bathwater.
But, then, I probably won't be buying a whole lot of Franklin Mint knives soon.
But, who knows, maybe they will get their act into order, one day

Hey - I'll stand up for Gerber's too - especially the older ones - they are quality! I carry an older L.S.T. all the time - question on those "plastic bucket" knives - is there enough of a ferrous alloy in them to strike a spark ? I've seen some that would not on a piece of real flint.
I avoid like the plague anything that says
"secret agent" or in anyway implies that you need a "harness" to carry it .. not too crazy about "butterflys" either - almost took my hand off with one in High School! and those that fail a modified lock test don't come home - Candy Striped scales regardless of who made it -even if a Chris Reeves model came out with it - FORGET IT!
Pakistan and China are words to avoid - I don't like rubber in knives either. God ! am I ever an opinionated sob! Otherwise - I'll take it if the price is right -

You guys have got me thinking. I don't think I will ever buy a knife w/ white micarta handles. I'd rather drop the extra cash and get either pearl, bone, or ivory, if I want a light color. It just seems cheesy.
Oh, and I refuse any multitool that comes with a patterned brown plastic sheath that claims to be "a genuine leatherlike pouch" (I was given one as a gift once, not kidding)

Hmm... I'm curious as to why everybody seems to dislike Frost Cutlery. I admit that my experience with that maker is limited, but I do own one of their fillet knives and I mus say that it so so far the best fillet knife I have used.

For me, I will never buy:
1. Hibben art knives. They look good and could be a conversational item, but I could never bring myself to spend money on a knife I could not use.

2. Knives with imitation "something" handles. Imitation wood, stag, etc. I don't mind delrin, kraton, zytel, glass-fibre or carbon-fibre reinforced plastics, but not if they are made out to be some natural handle material. All these man-made materials have their strengths and weaknesses, but the strengths cannot usually maximised if they are made to imitate something else.

3. From the local shops. They are absolute ripoffs. I wouldn't mind buying from them if, after currency conversion, they were only 10%-20% more expensive. But you know they are overcharging when the price is at least 1.5x to 2x as much as could be gotten from overseas via internet, even after shipping costs and money order commissions are factored in.

I would never buy a high $$ stag handled, damascus bladed knife. Yes i love drooling over them, but i could never afford one. Even if i could, i don't think i could make myself use it to do even the most menial of chores.


I would never buy a knife from my local knife shop. I noticed a SRK in there. There was a little stamp on the blade "Stainless steel" I inquired, as i know it isn't stainless. After much denial, the lady behind the counter admitted that they did it because most people wouldn't but a knife that wasn't stainless!!! I just stared at her in mute amazement.

James Healy, what you described is clearly illegal (at least in the US). Any decent person would take the time to explain that the black coating will protect the steel. Sheesh, talk about lame.

And as far as stag handled damascus blades go, well, save up. You can do it. It may seem like an impassible barrier, but if you REALLY want to do it, you will find the self-discipline to save. If you figure saving about $20 US weekly, you will have 240 in only 3 months. after seeing that savings of the first 240, the second 240 or so will be a breeze. And that might be enough to get what you want. Maybe not the absolute best, but a darn good one. (although you might have to get 9 months). If you're looking for a good deal, post on the "want to buy" forum. Someone should be able to swing a good deal your way.
