I would call her Chopohantos.

As many of you know, I mooched a loaner/user CGFBM earlier. I took Jaxx up on his more than gracious offer of the first one that took him all the way. A black/ green linen beauty. I want to say thank you to all who offered one and to those who would have if they had it to loan. You folks are incredible.
I have denounced the FBM for quite awhile as something I did not need. Man was I wrong. This is just a review because I need to set the record straight. Those who have one, already know how awesome the FBM is. For those who have not tried one, you have cheated yourself. I am not a BIG knife guy, but when I can hopefully afford one, she will be mine. I will name her Chopohantos.
I had a tree go down in the last storm here in the Pacific NorthWet and needed to clear some trails through my pecker poles and Salal. So here are some pics of how she performed.
First I had to chop up this Birch. I only did a few sections, but the largest section (8"-10") took me about an hour. That's pretty good for me, since I have severe Carpal Tunnel and some nerve damage in my shoulders.

I could not quit. It is a pure joy to swing this blade. I had to make it through too.

Finally! Success!

I finished with some more trail clearing. She and I were tired, but even with no sharpening, she was still sharp enough to cut salal in one swipe.

I did happen to find a couple hot spots. Maybe I'll wear gloves next time.

Once more, Thank You Jaxx! This has been Awesome! She is getting a bath and the best edge cleanup I can muster. She will be heading home on the 20th. I will miss her.

That twisted stump looked spring loaded, I wouldn't want to start there! Yep, those blisters sure show a few 'hot spots' but wearing gloves is like kissing through a screen door or was that...
I'm going to be a Monday morning quarterback but even though it may seem like you are having to remove more wood once you get a hole opened like this;

I keep that angle on through the cut. Opening that hole wide is easy once you get it started plus you get to watch more big chunks of wood fly! When your hand heals up go out and cut some more! Thanks for the pics.

I just noticed that those shots of the opening were after the tree had begun to give way so your opening may have been better than I thought.

I've done quite a bit of this with an axe, but the knife is very different. I did have to open the cut up more and more because the tree was closing and lowering.

I only got blisters because my hands are getting soft working for the school district. I need to do more of this to keep up the manly hands.;)

Fantastic workout, MMIAM. You definitely need and deserve yourself an FBM. I didn't much like my FBMLE...too big for my hands, and REALLY heavy to swing for long whiles, however I, too, would love to try a CG FBM or an NMFBM. Great write-up.

I might just have an extra CG or three laying around ... ditto on the NMs. However, the NMFBM is a pretty heavy customer.

If you want to try the old lady out, just send me a PM or an e-mail. You know where I live! :D

I will say this: MMIAB's forest makes my measly little wood look pretty rinky-dink. I hardly ever find chopping material that challenging.

You are such a Pimp! (Not that it's a bad thing :D)

You, my friend, are welcome to come chop (drink, hang out, etc.) any time.

Nice review. The FBM is a must have in my opinion. I don't have nearly the property that you have but, when it's time for some "pruning" the FBM is the first thing I reach for. Much more therapeutic than a chainsaw.

Sounds like you had a blast. I bought my first Busse about a month an a half ago, I bought a user FFBM. I went out and chopped for fun with it. I just sent it in to have it re finished, when I got it, it was stripped. I then picked up a CG FBM, love the feel of it, but I have not chopped anything with it yet. The Micarta on the first one felt much easier on the hands compared to the G10 on the CGFBM. I am trying real hard to grab a NMFBM ASAP. For a large chopper, I am not sure one could do much better than the CG FBM though, its just sweet as all hell.

Once I get the NMFBM I will do a review on all three. If you ever make it out towards Casper Wy, you should stop by, we can go out and have some fun.

You are absolutely welcome! Glad 'she' has changed your mind about the FBM's because they are just great choppers, and much fun to use. Great pix, thanxx for taking the time to shoot them! Looks like quite a workout there... Did she wear ya out yet? ;)

If you still have some chopping & trail clearing to do and if you'd like, why don't you keep her around for another week, and send her back after the next weekend? :) Up to you, the offer is out there. Maybe what ya might try is to get one of us HOGs to send you a user CGNMFBM and compare the 2 while she's still out there... :D

Jaxx, the chance at a comparison would be awesome, maybe somebody else will take pity. We'll see, I don't want to push my luck.
I will keep her another week since you offered. Thank you! I always have clearing to do and she has worn me out for the evening. She'll do it again tomorrow I think. Dirty girl!;)

Ya know....I do believe that the Combat Grade FBM is about the best chopper out there for the buck. Nice size and with mags it just handles really nicely. Personally the only blade that made me trade mine in was the LE NMFBM which is a FBM taken up a notch and put on steroids. If Jerry hadn't come out with the LE NMFBM, the CGFBM would have been the last big knife I would have had to buy.....Seriously. If you don't have a CGFBM or have doubts about getting one......Get One!

You will have No Regrets!
