I wouldn't be offended to be called frugal

So I'm always weighing cost, quality and value for the knives I buy. Some years ago I opined on this forum that I thought $100 was the optimal price point for quality versus cost for best value. As a result of my frugalism the majority of the knives I have cost under $100 and more likely under $75.

Well I went and did it for the first time and spent $200  on a Benchmade Osbourne 940-1501. the model with the CPM-20Cv blade and Blue/black G-10 scales.

And I have not one regret in doing so. $200 well spent as I see it. Now I understand the appreciation that so many have for it.

Guess I'm not so frugal anymore:D

Frugal and cheap are not the same thing! That knife will last forever and have solid resale.

Frugal is spending money correctly, cheap is not spending money. I think being called frugal is a compliment

Wow, that's a nice scale set on that knife. I have never liked that particular knife (have held them multiple times), just never warmed up to it. But that version with those "Tron" scales is sweet. Enjoy it, man!

I somewhat agree with the $100 price point but it seems that a lot of good folders now are working their way up the price ladder and aren't so close to $100 anymore.

But the way the prices work out it is hard to find a good knife with good steel for under $100 unless you search used. But you can find good knives with lesser steel made overseas for less than $50 such as the Ontario Rat 1 and the Spyderco Tenacious.

Palonej - I'd like to claim that 940 with the awesome scales.... Oh sorry wrong thread! ;)

I am also frugal, but I call it thrifty! It always has to be a rational value to price ratio for me. I think it's just being practical with limited resources. Oddly enough, I'm willing to spend more money on other people than I will on myself. When it comes to me buying for me, I am very cheap!

Nice try JP!!!!!!! Had me thinking for a second there brother!!!
I'm the same way with the cash........other people in my life always come first!!

I've had a couple of RAT 1's, and they are good knives, but I'm much happier in the price range of between $100-$200.
For instance, a Spyderco PM2 in S110V or CPM-M4 is really hard to beat.

A few of my "friends" call me "Squeaky". I'm not a wealthy person and simply live within my means as best I can. I was the same type of collector for years, nothing over $100, most under $50. I collected traditionals at first. I think they were much cheaper a few years ago, or I just did a lot of research and knew when something was selling cheap (patience is key to buying thrifty). But then I got into moderns and after going through the usual Kershaw, CRKT and Boker brands, I started to wonder what the story was with ZT and Benchmade. Were they really better? So I traded a few and recently broke down and bought a ZT 452 at retail (RETAIL!!) and ... yeah, there's a difference. But I find every knife has it's ups and downs. The ZT just doesn't flip right, and for $170, it damned well should flip better than $60 Boker, but it doesn't. So, I'll keep looking for my deals, but I know I'll never plunk down the change for a custom if even the higher end production knives aren't that much better the mid-ranges.
