Not really an ice ax but the average temp in my shop has been around 30 degrees since I started this project. Its not totally finished but real close. The head was hand forged out of 1" square 1080. I up set the front to almost 2" before I started forging the bit. The customer was wanting 4" point to point on the bit. If I had a large enough opening in the forge I could have gotten 5" easily. Its got a 13 1/2" extra curly maple haft. I'll get more pictures after its completed.

That's freaking awesome Ray!!!  I like everything about it!

We're snowed in here... almost a foot, which is really rare for us. Maybe it's time for me to make an ice ax :D

Nick, I've been thinking about making some snow shoes. When I left my shop about an hour and a half ago there was a snow drift that was at least 18" deep. I think we have close to a foot of snow also.

Sweet! The curve of the edge looks aggressive and I like hammer polls. The curly maple is beautiful too.

That's incredible looking.

Did you drill out the hole ?

Luke, If your referring to the eye, yes it was drilled. Actually I drilled two 5/8" holes after I forged the bit and then cleaned out the web with carbide burrs. I did a fair amount of upsetting and it works better if the bar of steel is solid when I do that. There was no drifting done to this eye. All basically stock removal for the eye.

damn! Sorry fellas. Thats one cool ass AX! Best in 2008 award goes to...... RAY!!
