Not really an ice ax but the average temp in my shop has been around 30 degrees since I started this project. Its not totally finished but real close. The head was hand forged out of 1" square 1080. I up set the front to almost 2" before I started forging the bit. The customer was wanting 4" point to point on the bit. If I had a large enough opening in the forge I could have gotten 5" easily. Its got a 13 1/2" extra curly maple haft. I'll get more pictures after its completed.

Looks good Ray. They always do. Need to shine up that wood though. There is some real grain itching to get out.

I've just got one coat of oil on it now. I've been putting the haft in my heat treating oven at 90 degrees to help dry it out. I plan to get a couple more coats on it. The head is just sitting on it now.

Looks like a really practical-for-actual-work design, Raymond!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Hey Ray,
Looking forward to pics of it completed, man is that nice and the extra curly maple haft only adds, imo.
Thanks for showing us.

Not what I envisioned from the title...but that is sweet.

I was thinking it was an ax climbers use to climb walls of ice:D

Looking good ray. I no how hard it is to work when it's that cold, I bought a smell oil heater so I could stand to be in my knife shop as the bitter cold has been keeping me out.

Dave, My usual attire when it gets like this is a couple layers on under my thermal coveralls and insulated boots. I can't stand to wear gloves so my hands are the first thing to become a problem. Its either light up the forge or turn on the hair dryer to warm them up. Just to large of an area to try and heat up. Sounds like it will be like it is for a good week if not more.

Ray, that one is just the bomb!:D

Might even like it better'n mine!!!!

Stay warm - I've got 4"'s of snow on my truck just last nite!!! Have fallen twice walking around here... 'Course, the second time I didn't feel it 'cause I was using Ta-Kill-Ya as antifreeze! :D

Now, make one of those with about 35" haft and iron point on the end and maybe I can navigate around here and you can really call it an Iceaxe!!

:D

Hey Joe, Go easy on the antifreeze consumption. It may give you a false sense of security. Hate to see you end up with a full body stiffee. :D Wish I had some snow shoes. Just walking out to the shop was a real workout. Does your truck look anything like my cows?

VERY nice Ray!

I really like the bit --- is that what they call "double bearded?" I'm referring to the flares on top and bottom.

Eli, Your guess is as good as mine. To tell you the truth I really don't know. That's the only way I could figure out to get the 4" bit with the 1" square steel.
