Ice breaking axe ;-))

Great posts:) This reminds me of my buddy who just welded a cracked single bit axe head to a steel bar and it works pretty sweet as a ice spud ,and the axe is still in good condition(other than the cracked eye).
 
I removed the original finish. Did a hot orange juice finish on the metal. I shortened the haft to 16 inches and did a leather wrap to increase grip security. The hawk is a fair splitter and chopper. I could get more power in my swings with a longer haft, but shortened in case I needed to use it for CQC. I have only used the spike in ice once and it performed well. I also use it in digging edible roots, etc. Edwood's experience with spikes and body armor also helped me make my decision.
