Hey, its a long weekend and as I took off from work I noticed a great sunset offset by the ice flows running down the Detroit River and under the Ambassador Bridge. Picked off a couple of shots and will be waiting for spring!

You know, in the past 8 years I pretty much have boated every foot of this river and despite some of its visible problems and ipolluted spots, sometimes a body of water just gets inside of ya! Can't wait to put the boat back in and say hello yet again.

My father's family settled on the banks of this water in the 1770's and we just seem to keep getting drawn back here.

awesome , just awesome

I dunno how you live in such a cold place tho ..

Nope, but we have a direct intake of the water at my work. Right now the water is a balmy 1oC !

KGD,

Talked to a friend of mine tonight. He's a member of a boat club in the Downriver area. (Wyandotte. US side ,upriver from Amherstburg) He said that there were boats on the water today dodging the ice flows.

If no one minds, I'm going to ramble about my home town since KGD was nice enough to post pics.

Myal,

We haven't seen that much ice in quite a while. This winter has been exceptionally cold. We've come close to record snowfall and have had unusually long stretches of brutal cold this winter. We're expecting another 1" to 3" of snow tomorrow and there's no sign of a warming trend in the near future.

For anyone interested, the building on the far right (looks like its giving Canada the finger) is the Renaissance Center. Now the General Motors headquarters. To the left of that (brightly lit) is the Omni International Hotel. Just to the right of that building (with the spire, left of the hovering red dot) is the CN, or City National building, a banking center in Detroit. In the foreground of that is the River Front towers. The small gray patch to the right of them is Joe Lewis Arena. Home of the Detroit Red Wings.

I grew up in the neighborhood of that bridge. I could see it from my house. Every year Detroit, MI and Windsor Ontario have a celebration called the Freedom Festival. For a long time they had the largest fireworks display in North America. Three barges, anchored off Hart Plaza (between the Ren Cen/GM HQ and the Riverfront towers) loaded to the gills with fireworks. I used to watch them from the second floor porch/balcony of our two family house.

At one point, it was rumored that you could set the Detroit River/Lake Erie on fire due to the contaminants in the water. Today, Lake St Clair (north of the Detroit River) is one of the nations premiere Musky/Pike fisheries. Loaded with Smallmouth as well. The Detroit River has become a hot spot for Walleye. The mouth of Lake Erie is a Perch haven.

One more thing kgd. As a kid my parents used to take me to the park that you took the pics from. Riverside Park IIRC? Some great memories of that place. Being on your side of the river and looking across at home just stired the soul. Detroit doesn't look nearly as bad from your viewpoint.

Great description Rupestris - still chuckling about the Renaissance giving us the finger. My mother lives in one of the old age homes that is right across the river from the Renaissance. She lives on the 19th floor and faces the river. The freedom festival fireworks are stunning from her balcony. You actually feel the percussion of the explosions.

The river has some gorgeous areas in it downstream. I really enjoy Sugar and Celeron Islands alot. Michigan and Windsor are falling on hard economic times at the moment, but that will change in time. We do have water and it will take the drying up of Lakes Huron and Michigan to change that fact. The west doesn't have water and at some point, industry will have to move back here for that precious resource!

Come back to Detroit and treat yourself to some fun Mexican town culture and perhaps a little of the Jazz fest!

Didn't you hear? The first day of spring was yesterday!!! At least it was for us, 70F and sunny. Maybe Canada's spring hasn't started yet?!

Seriously though, those are some awesome pictures!!! Looks like a beautiful river.
