we're getting a bit of ice damage today - several trees have seen fit to drop a butt load of branches. one of them had a squirrel nest (it's okay i think), but it scared the piss out of the squirrel. took some pix. later

there are also numerous power flickers, nothing longer than 10 seconds. the UPSuseseses are not amused.

some of the ice coatings are 2-3 mm thick on a quick look when tkaing pictuers. this doesn't also include the weight of the 1-2 inch long mini icicles over each needle, node, and branch. looks like same for overnite. i expect a lot of trees to be breaking.

once, back in band camp, er upstate new york (canada, eh?), i used to commute, mmm, winter of 83/84, there were two ice storms. one of them was the ice storm to end all ice storms. trees had 1 inch "black ice" accretions, which meant they were as crystal clear, heavy, and strong as could be. they took down ... oh so many trees. the road sides were littered with pretty much anything smaller than 6 inches in diameter. the rest just lost their branches. man. talk about devastation. hurt the maple crop something fierce too.

this is just pretty, for now. sunlight would make it blinding.

update:

26 hours - no power

quick post just in case...

lost power around 3:30 pm monday from the icestorm, it only just came on now, so call it 26 hours. they TRIED to fix it. just a 16 minute tease around 9 hours ago, but something exploded so they left. hah.

let's hope it holds. the icestorm took down a lot of heavy branches, but no trees that i saw.

a number of people i've talked to have complained that they lost $100s in food (errrrr, put on porch guys), most of my freezer seems to have held nicely. then again, i didn't open the box but once.

temps never got below 60 inside, but not over 65 either. otay. it's snowing medium heavy now and the temps are low 20s. perhaps we won't get that sub-zero weather they predicted.

have the temps cranked and letting it get to 77 or so before i let it idle... just in case.

good to know i can fall off the world for a day and nobody notices

i'm just glad the ice weasels didn't show up.

Hey bladite. Hang tight and keep it warm. You can always chop up fallen trees and "go bonfire" if you have to. That tends to keep the ice weasels away.

And remember to dress in layers. Preferably not cotton, aka "the fabric of death."

If the sun comes out on that ice tomorrow, take a pic or two.

i'm not very worried right now. worst case, i have places i could go, and fires i could start. for sure. lots of downed wood. plenty to chop to keep active.

i'm camping boy, lots of synthetics!

and thanx

wow... hang in there bladite :) glad to see youre back online :D
guess it was a good time to practice some urban survival skills dealing without power

Do yourself a favor and check out the amazig wool products out there now. Ibex comes to mind as I own 4 or 5 pieces by them.

Wool doesn't stink like synthetics, plus it holds it shape and elasticity way longer than cotton or synthetics, breathes, warm when wet, AND isn't itchy at all if you buy the right kind. In fact I have a sleep shirt made from Merino wool by Ibex that is as soft as silk--people never can guess what its made of when I ask them to guess. Amazing stuff!!

I'm reminded of the ice storm of 1998. LOTS of fallen branches and limbs all around. Luckily my area was not hit as badly as Quebec... the ice even toppled some electrical towers and many were without power for 6 weeks or more.

Anyway, it was a golden age for usin' my khukuris! Wish I had my HI AK back then.
