I'd like to get into traditionals

The Great Eastern Cutlery #35 Calfpen is a favorite of mine. While the wharncliffe blade is two handed opening it does feature a linerlock. The second blade is of the "one arm" type and can be opened by hooking the protrusion on the edge of something and pulling it open. I have done this on the edge of my pocket but be careful. I'm not sure if any of the online dealers still have any in stock, but you should be able to find one as for some reason they're not in demand as GEC's prettier offerings. While not fully traditional enough to be posted in this sub forum, check out the Case kickstart trappeelock if you still would like fully one handed opening and a pocket clip. And finally welcome to the Porch, and be forewarned traditionals are very addictive :D:thumbsup:

Yes lagioules are traditional and the nearest standard pattern I know of is the Texas toothpick which I see mentioned earlier as well. I personally didn't like using either (I've owned both a toothpick and lagioule) but loved the look.

One-handed opening generally disqualifies a knife from traditional, or blends the lines anyway. I feel like they're more of a traditional-looking modern knife at that point, but then again I think I would count some of the old automatic knives like Italian stilettos as traditional so it's not super cut and dry.

Let me know what interests you and I can send you up a few of mine to play around with if you like. I have a strong preference for 2-bladed traditionals these days but I still have a few single-bladed options. I'm all out of 3+ bladed options after selling them off a few years ago.

This years blade forum knife might be up your street, link at the top of the traditional forum.

This?

If so it looks pretty fantastic. I'd own a nail nick, it's just not my favorite for reasons of one handed opening, but then again I will always have a modern on me, too...

That sure is kind of you Chad. Remind me when we talk next?

Many lock back knives can be opened one handed, despite the lack of a thumb purchase. Case and Böker make some locking folders with thumbstuds that are otherwise traditional.

I’m just getting into traditionals as well. I like larger single blade knives, Case Bose Tribal Spear, Case Texas Toothpick, and I bought the knife of the year because I really like warncliffe blades (though I do plan to mod it because I don’t think I’ll be able to get used to the swayback).

Ideally I’d love to find a twin of my CaseBose Tribal Spear with a warncliffe blade.

Ooh nice, now give me the bottom one's ... beak? crest? What do you call that thing? with the top one's blade shape!

Not really a traditional but maybe we could call it a good “transition knife” would be a Chris Reeves Mnandi with the old nail nick because it’s a one handed open (and expensive). I’m new so hopefully I didn’t just get myself kicked off the porch there.

I couldn’t agree more about the mnandi, it kicked the Buck 303 medium stockman out of my pocket after 45 years of carry. And don’t let the nail nick fool you, it thumb rolls open as easy as could be.

I’m also looking at le theirs 10 cm here’s the cow horn tip...lots of handle options, locking blade, I’m gonna need a weekend job.

Beautiful knives. Just ordered one of those last night. The 11.5 cm size, with boxwood handle. Although all of the handle options are attractive. I love the lines on the Thiers knife.

Not my picture, Case makes the Russlock with a drop point blade also. The thumb lever takes a little getting used to but once you do it’s quite easy to open. I would love it if Case made the Russlock with a Wharncliffe blade but I do like the clip blade version.

Off topic because it’s not helping a purchase decision but the topic made me pull it out of the drawer. I got this in Sardinia maybe 15 years ago. No liners or nail nick no idea what steel it is or the handle material. I’m guessing horn from something local. I love the simplicity of it and the color of the covers.
