I'd like to re-visit the whole sharpening question............

Take a look at the DMT aligner kit. Cheap, diamond hones, works like the Lansky. I never had much luck with my Sharpmaker (disabled - hard to hold knife vertical) so I switched to the DMT aligner and have been very happy. HTH

Had never seen one of these before. Well made??, stand up to regular use?? Are you able to get extra stones for it, (from the look of it, looks like it uses standard 4x1)??
 
You're right, it uses standard 4x1 stones. It's made well enough although out of some type of plastic. However, the plastic clamp doesn't scratch my knives. It comes with 3 different diamond stones as shown, why would you need more? I also like the fact that it has numerous marked angles you can set. For what I do it works fine. I'm not a real sharpening "nut". I don't care if my knife shaves or not, just that its sharp enough to cut what I want smoothly. Heresy, I know! :D
