I found it at a flea market. $10 with a fairly new handle. I thought through the dirt it was stamped USGI but now that I have wire brushed it I think it says US 01. Rough finish on the top and bottom. Also looks like maybe it is a steel sandwiched in iron, based on how it cleaned up when I sharpened it. Here are the pics.

The edge shines up better than the back area, I'm thinking a composite.

USGI makes me think US Gov't Issue. maybe an old cruisers axe? issued to timber cruisers and surveyors?

I'm waffling between USGI and US01. I was leaning along similar users.

I measured the head. It is ten inches by five. Larger than what is considered a cruiser head from what I googled.

a company named woodings Verona used a mark close to that. I have axes they made marked as US95, US96, and a few other numbers. Joe

I found a few images online that are similar. Apparently they were absorbed by Ames. Thanks.
