Idea for strider folder/lanyard snipper

I just got an smf nsn model and am a lanyard guy. I like the way they look and I also like them for finding and pulling my knife easily out of my pocket. I'm sure all that own striders are aware that if you thread a lanyard through both scales the blade will snip it right in half. Now I realize that you can go through one scale and tie it tight but if the blade is centered well like mine is even tied as tight as I can get it the blade still can come in contact with 540 cord if not gutted. Especially if the lanyard slides down the side towards the spine. I feel gutted cord just looks to skimpy for this beast of a knife not to mention that limits many of the emergency uses of the cord. Anyways I have an idea and was wondering if anyone has tried it. I don't see any pics on a Google search. What if a guy was to make a split D ring and make it clamp into the holes so you could put a lanyard at the end of the knife and away from the blade? I think this would work slick and might even look ok with a nice titanium d-ring anodized or whatever. What are your guys thoughts on this? If it has been done can I see pictures?

That's a good idea with the D-ring.
I dunt like a lanyard on my SnG, though.

I have to admit that the more I learn about Strider, the less I like them. You have to break them in forever, you need to use pencil lead to make the frame lock less sticky. You have to make a mod so that the knife doesn't cut the lanyard.......Seems like a VERY poorly designed knife. Got my first one last week and sent it back yesterday. OP, you're idea about the D-ring is good, but should you really need to do that on a $400 knife...?

As the OP stated, the lanyard goes into and through ONE of the lanyard holes.
I had 5 Striders knives and they all just broke right in. hmm???

Wait a second, are you telling me that this knife has a lanyard hole, but if you use a lanyard, it will cut it? AND it costs $500?!?!?! Seriously?

Wait a minute. You are saying it has a lanyard hole, and if you put a lanyard though it, the blade cuts it!?!?

Neither of my SnGs needed breaking in and that is NOT a lanyard hole but rather a mini-cigar cutter. :D

Lol, I agree it is strange and the fact that the design hasn't changed in 20 years or whatever since they made the first gen 1 lanyard clipper/folding knife. It really is a sweet knife reguardless of this little flaw. It does work to have it through one side but if your blade is centered it still catches the 550 cord sometimes unless you gut it and tie it tight. There's just something about a strider that I really love. It just begs to be used hard but all this is another thread. I take it no-one has tried or seen this done? I think the idea could catch on a be a great option for an sng smf. I will be on the hunt for some metal to make a little prototype. I don't have a lot of tools or access to any titanium rod at the moment but maybe I can order some. The only thing I'd be worried about is the end of the knife might get scratched up a bit from the metal

Ok. I understand the intrinsic appeal of a strider. It definitely can take a beating and still keep on ticking!! However, I'll choose to have my $400 knife perfect from the moment it comes out of the box. Just me.

huh? i had my strider SnG for just a week. it's broken in in 1st day. just flicked it around 10 times and it's now smooth as silk. Lanyard issue? here's a 550 paracord not being cut. just put it in one side.

I couldn't agree more, especially when you consider

it is strange and the fact that the design hasn't changed in 20 years or whatever since they made the first

Now that, that's just laziness, 20 years and they refuse to change the design, this is to be expected from a cheap Chinese knife, but for $500, I'll definitely be spend ing my money elsewhere

Well, how many years did it take them to get the lockup right all the while telling you that it was crappy for a reason? It's going to be a while.. Maybe you just aren't tough enough to use the knife correctly? ;-)

I just use mine til the lanyard is cut all the way through and then make another one.. to make up for the design flaw..

And to the person who posted the picture of the blade touching the lanyard and saying it doesn't, look closer and then look again after a week of use..
