Hello People of Bladeforums..

Im from Denmark and im in seek of inspiration for my newest project.

At the moment im studying to become a Metal worker, works mostly with heavy iron for the greenhouse industry.
but im getting closer to my exam which is around april 2016....

Ive had a huge interest in making my own knifes, and im trying to build up my own tools for completing such task´s.

Here you can see my design so far, its only very basic, and im planning to fill the edge of the forge with firewool, and lay kind of an foundation of fire bricks.

Hope you have the time, to give some advices

Kind regards

Jimmy Nielsen :)

You might want to field this question in knifemakers shop talk or in the forum specifically for forgers. A lot of those guys don't ever come into the general knife section

A straight on burner won't work well for knives. It gives a hot spot and very uneven heating which isn't good for knifemaking. Normally, you want a parallel to a chord tangent to the chamber, angled slightly back so it swirls in from the front to the back and then to the front again, giving it the most opportunity to combust fully. A small port at the back will help reduce the pressure in the chamber and allow the heat to flow more freely to the back of the chamber. Try to keep your knifemaking chamber around 125-150mm diameter, and 300-400mm long. This will give you plenty of room to work larger items, such as hawks, bowies, etc.
