Hey yall! I've been seeing a lot of threads recently about how great serrated H1 is. Also a thread about how great a hawkbill blade can be for pull cutting, and other edc. I can't help but wonder if the civilian kind of a curve would be even better? You see it on the cricket, on the dodo. So, logically, in my mind at least, a civilian, although "scary looking," could and would make a decent edc. But, it's vg10. Stainless, but I once kept mine floating in my pants pocket for a few days, and when I pulled it out there were spots of rust. A self defense knife, in my mind, is generally clipped to the waistband. An edc knife also does well there, as long as the clip is deep enough carry to not poke you in the stomach when you bend. So, rust really is a concern. If I rusted vg10 in my pocket, It is certainly plausible to rust in my waistband. Furthermore, a self defense knife is something I don't want to rust, even if I leave it without oil or maintenance.

Also, edge retention. In my experience, vg10 isn't great. Maybe I got a bad heat treat, you tell me. It's blade is stiff after 500 openings, it's not centered, and the edge retention isn't there. If all those things though, it's the edge retention that bothers me the most.

There is a reason both the civilian and matriarch are in SE. What steel holds the best edge in SE? As all those threads currently out there prove, along with testimony from Mr. Glesser, it's H1, hands down.

So, what in asking for, is a civilian styled knife, in serrated H1. I could be crazy, but I want it. What do all of you think?

I've always advocated for a full Spyderedged (serrated) Matriarch in H1 as a Sprint.

I know many other back me up on this, but we don't seem to bring enough attention!

Yeah, either a Civilian, lil'Matriarch, or Matriarch 1 or 2 in H1 would do the trick for many of us. The Spyderhawk did marvels in the H1 version, a true champ. But that's no reverse S, even though it's a truly awesome blade

And, if we're at it, bring bang the Spyderhawk!

So yeah, push! I'm in for this one, as a true fan of both H1 and Spyderco Hawkbills/Reverse S folders!

Make it a Lil' Matriarch Salt and I am in. I realize that using the Delica4 handle isn't an option so the standard Tasman handle with a Lil' Matriarch blade would be great.

An H-1 Matriarch, based on the older unlined FRN handle currently used by the Pacific Salt would probably be the most feasible and SE would be the obvious choice for it.

Thank you for explaining that, it's really just the long, serrated, s curve H1 I'm looking for.

Older FRN unlined handle would be fine to me. I have old and new versions of the Matriarch and have found the handle of the older version fits my hand better.

That being said, what I'm waiting for is the new version of the Civilian that is somewhere on the horizon.

I'd be onboard for a Lil' Matriarch. The classic civilian/matriarch are interesting knives, but the aggressive hawkbills limit their utility.

The lil Matriarch is the call for this. The lil Matriarch makes a MUCH better EDC than the full sized one. Less extreme and stronger tip. I would use a se lil Matriarch Salt every day on my kayak if they made one. I like the Tasman for certain tasks on my kayak but the bit of belly back by the heel on the lil Matriarch make it a FAR more versatile blade than the Tasman. Bring it on!!!

Lil matriarch in SE H1, linerless. I'd be all one that. Love my SE Tasman salt but like others a little belly would make it more versatile.

Only problem is that the Lil Matriarch is fairly new, so its blade is designed for the Delica 4 handle, not sure if it would work with the Delica 3/Salt 1/Tasman Salt handle without some R&D costs.

Thats no problem Paul. They are currently updating all the Salts to the e4/d4 handles. :D

H1 steel is used for its corrosion resistance, not its edge holding capabilities. V10 will hold its edge much better than H1 in any configuration because it has higher hardness and wear resistance. Most modern steels will because H1 is a softer steel due to not using carbon. H1 has its advantages, but edge holding is not one of them. Sharpen ability and yada yada yada. A little research goes a long way.

I could be incorrect, but I thought serrated h1 was known for extreme edge holding capability, dude to the process used to grind the serrations.
