ideal blade length for a hunting knife?

I can clean squirrels with an 18" blade just as fast, if not faster than a 2" blade. So no big deal either way on that one. Rabbits pretty much the same thing. Quail and doves I could get by with just a wire snips/stout scissors and no knife at all. It's not like I'm performing quadruple bypass surgery on the things. :)

depends on the hunting style and what your hunting. personally i like a 3 1/2 to 4 inch blade length and is all your ever going to need. i can break an elk down with a 3 1/2 inch blade no problem. I also use whats called the gutless method of breaking a animal down and never have need of gutting. 3 knifes in the field?? On my coloradao elk hunt this year 1 days gps round trip at elevations between 9.5k and 11k was 14.5 miles with a pack at 30 pounds. extra weight like 2 extra knifes is no good. so as my first sentence depends on your style , location and animals.
