Ideal buck knife for everyday use.

Any one of these for my daily use. They have proven themselves over the last year or two. DM

I EDC my large re-scaled Buck Vantage. Often, I'll carry a second knife with me just because I want to try it out, but the Vantage never leaves my side.

@Buck knives I like, I carried a Buck 112, the finger grooved variant, for a while. I really liked it. It's a little hefty due to the brass, but I liked the weight for the solid feel of the brass. The handle just melts into my hand (my hands are a little small though).

Here are some pics from when I carried both knives:

I don't really want to open up a thread for this, so i'll ask it here. Are thumb studs illegal on folding knives in the state of new york? I read the knife laws and I still don't know.

I've carried a Buck 309 "Companion" since 1977. For approx. 10 yrs. it rode solo. A lot of knives have come along for the ride, but the 309 has ALWAYS been the edc. I have carried it during various jobs. It has dressed a couple pick-up loads of game,up to and including a couple goats.Anything bigger, the 25ot, Old Timer, gets used. It's a lot of knife, for a little space and weight! regards Henry

Does anyone have input on how a buck 112 would be for an EDC.
Edit: I believe the 110 to be too big for EDC.

I agree that the 110 can get a little bulky, and the 112 seems to do everything a 110 can do. I carry a 4 dot 112 on my belt about 75% of the time. I've actually carried it in the pocket, but the slimmer 500 works better for pocket use. Unless I'm carrying alot of gear, hiking, or biking where every ounce counts, the weight of a 112 doesn't seem excessive for me. If weight is critical, I'd go for a plastic handled Buck.

If I don't feel like belt carry, I usually opt for a 503 in the jeans pocket. It's an excellent size & weight.

If I'm wearing dress pants, I grab one of my Executives or a 505 Knight. Keep them sharp and those tiny little guys never fail to impress.

Personally, I prefer the older Bucks, although I have new ones also, but that's just me, with most items I collect. I guess I feel that an older item that's in great contition is a little more scarce, and therefore has a little more character & value to me ... and largely because the ebony slabs are solid, as opposed to laminated veneer. Several of my older 110's and 112's have absolutely beautiful macassar ebony scales. Some folks feel the earlier steels are better, but I'm not a metallurgist and do not have a strong opinion on that. Most of my Bucks seem to hold their edge quite well, old or new.

Got a great deal on this older 500 with old script logo, because the bolsters are a little scratched, but the blade is like factory new. The bolsters will be easy to polish out to look like new.

Gotta love the older Executives - slim, sleek, and a simple but elegant design.

In essence, they're all great for EDC ... just depends on your size / weight concerns. Hope you find the Buck that is right for you.

The 112 is a great knife, carried one for years as a scout in AK.

Then in the '80s, discovered the 422, which was built like a tank but much lighter than the 112.

These days, for EDC I prefer the 300 series: 307, 301, 303, 309 (all of them '70s/early '80s era)

I've got a new 301, nice knife, but it just doesn't seem to have what the old school 301 has. But I'm sure it will grow on me.

It used to be the 110 but now that I'm retired this 301 is the one I carry most often.

Thanks Dave!:thumbup::)

I'm assuming that by EDC, you mean pocket carry?

I find the 112 to be possible to pocket carry provided you don't mind some weight in your pocket. I notice it for the first hour or so. Note, I wear baggy carpenter jeans most days. With closer fitting slacks, I prefer a thinner knife like the 500. I've also rounded the bolsters of my old 2 dotter and it carries much better. Modern ones have softened bolsters. I generally strongly dislike clip points. I really dislike the 110's blade, for instance. But I can live with the 112's blade. The lines work for me for some reason.

I think beauty counts for an EDC knife, and frankly, I think the 112 is the most beautiful production knife made. I find there to be something incredibly magical about holding and using the 112.

Buck has other alternatives in the size range.

Lots of people love the Vantage. Frame lock. More modern look. Thinner and lighter than the 112.

The Ecolite 112 is very nice. Much lighter than the 112. Looks very nice IMO but it does loose some of that magic for me.

The new Spitfire is in this size range and might be worth a look.

301, 303, 501 - all ride nicely in a front pocket. OH

Ps When I get my hands on a new 2013 Buck 500 I will give that a try - as flat as they are I think a 500 will be the one large knife that will work well for front pocket carry.

I think alot of whether or not a knife makes a good edc is how you carry it and if it's for pocket carry, the type of pants you wear. I never got into the new fangled baggy type with huge pockets. I prefer my Wranglers or Lee jeans which are tight fitting and don't lend themselves much to the pocket carry of anything much larger than a 301 or a 501. A 500 might be possible for me, but I don't think so.

I wear "regular" fit Levi's 501s, which aren't loose but also aren't super tight fitting like "slim fit" jeans are. I don't find it uncomfortable to carry a large Vantage clipped to my right front pocket. I find I really like pocket clips for keeping the knife oriented vertically, which for me serves two purposes- it keeps the knife out of the way of the other stuff I store in my pockets, and it keeps the knife close to the side of my hip so the knife doesn't get in the way when I bend my hips (when sitting, for instance). It helps that the conservatively designed deep carry clip on the Vantage is much more discreet than many other knife pocket clips (even more so if you get one of the blackened Vantage Force models).

I've been enjoying my new Bantam 285 in orange. Mostly I carried a Vantage Force Pro in green prior to the Bantam.
The 301 is great too. Of course, I have a soft spot for a stag 701 I recieved as a gift from Plummer Dave.

A TNT is fantastic if you can find one these days.
