Talking about a carry size piece, not a big chopper. What's the recommended ideal hardness for CPM M4? I know, I can read the spec sheets; I just want opinions from real people who have worked with and used M4. Thanks, in advance.

I would say 64 Rc would not be unreasonable. depends on thickness and intended use of course, but for a smaller piece I would be very comfortable with 63-64, maybe even 65 Rc. I have a thick 5" blade that I took to 62, and feel that it could have gone harder.

63-64 would be my upper end. I like to keep the steel in the "safe" zone of toughness.

I suggest getting some BU S690 if you can. Extremely nice steel.

I made some M-4 kitchen blades in 1/8" I had them done at Rc 64. I don't think they will ever get dull. One got a chip due to misuse, but the others are still fine as far as I know.
