Ideas for new MT balisong...

C´mon Gollnick!

You are one creative guy. I´ve read a lot of your earlier posts.

It wouldn´t be to expensive to cut out metal and changing the weight. Sort of like the spyderco "R" knives (uh, you know the discontinued model).

I think it would work and it wouldn´t cost too much.

True,it's easy to make blank blades that are of an appropriate weight that won't change the whole balance of the knife.Even if it does,it's still something to work with...since a lot of us do own several knives, each of which is a different weight.Practicing with different weights is a good thing.

True, any blank blade should be made so that it can easily be distinguished from a real blade...just in case. And as a real safe measure, bring *just* the blade to your local police department and ask them if it would be considered legal and if it's easily distinguishable from a real blade. If they say yes on both accounts, ask them if you could carry a balisong if it has that blade in it.If they say yes,ask them to post a photo of it for all of the officers to look at so they can know that if they see it,they shouldn't shoot you or hassle you about it.

I've known a lot of LEOs since my younger days when I first started with balisongs. I've also taught a bunch of them how to manipulate the balisong. Many of them have been into balisongs ever since, and don't hassle anyone about carrying one unless they see it being used in a crime or being carried by a known troublemaker/criminal,or if they know the blade length is too long for local laws.Otherwise, they have no problem with them.
Not all officers are mean & nasty, and most are very willing to work with people. If you think logically and show respect, intelligence and civility...you can get the local police on your side. The same goes for the politicians who make your local laws.

If someone wants to make a comb insert for a balisong,I hope it's one with the tines on one side only. Those double sided ones suck!

Yeah, I'm no knife maker, but I can't see why drilling a few holes in the right place wouldn't get the weight and balance at least close to a real blade. Can't be that hard.

Thats a good idea, solves the problem pretty good IMO. I'm dont know much about how mass produced blades are made, but if for some reason drilling holes would make it too expensive (extra step?), what about blade matterials? Aluminum, or a tough nylon based plastic, Zytell....

If holes alone were not enough, then aluminum with holes should be.

Hey, Mike Turber would know!
Mr Turber, what are your thoughts on this, or do you allready have an answer?

Okay, another idea... injection molded reinforced colored plastic à la spyderco handle material, molded around a soft metal framework (like brass) to give the same live-weight characteristics as the standard blade. Make it any safety color you want, so it's obviously not a live blade, and noone needs to worry about whether an edge can be put on plastic.

That's my idea for the blade... as far as the notion of appearance, I'm sure most of us can remember the mess entertech made in the 80's with the realistic squirt guns that got used to rob banks, etc, which is why toy guns all have that orange barrel now...

...and for those of you hell-bent on the bali-comb idea, I suppose they could even manage to mold that in there somewhere, too : )

First, plastic CAN hold a darn good edge. Ive been cut many times on plastic and there are some knives that are made today out of plastic and fiberglass for lightweight, last ditch weapons.
Secondly, Im glad I kept all my high quality all metal construction cap guns LOL if I ever needed to rob a bank Ive got those. All I need now is a Balicomb to complete my arsenal.

Well, yeah, point taken... but plastic is still less likely to attract hassles than a steel blade...and would still be cheaper, which was the main idea

How about a balisong PDA stylus/pointer? Then I can use my PDA in style

MacCanine, it really is a very good idea to have you local LEO agree on dummy bali, so that we can practice everywhere and anywhere ..

If you want to tape up your blade really well but want to avoid having to clean it or worrying about the tape somehow tarnishing the blade, try cutting out 2 pieces of paper in the shape of the blade but just a bit larger and then taping the pieces together to form a "sheath" and then tape it all up with electrical tape and maybe let the tape
wrap around the base of the blade just once to secure it. Im going to try it tonight and ill let you know how it goes.

In all actuality, you don't even need anything the length of a blade.Someone had accidentally broken off the whole edge area of a PC blade.Don't ask me how...I can't remember. All that was left was the complete tang area, with just enough of the spine to do some of the moves. The knife wasn't what we would call a really expensive PC,so he just bought a new one to replace it.But,he ground down the tang area of the broken one so that it had no sharp areas from the break. We all tried manipulating this, and it worked extremely well. There was no "loss" of blade weight to us.The handles & tang area performed as though the knife still had a full blade.I know that someone made a rounded tip insert that was just a tad longer than the broken blade and put it in place of the broken blade, and it still worked wonderfully. The trick is finding the right balance points for the pivot pins.
So,if someone did this,I think we could have a completely "safe" bali that LEO's would let us carry in public. We'd just have to show them what the "blade" would be (not in the handles) for the bali.
You'll never know until you try.
