He has his own farm, does tons of things outside everyday, and works 3 on/3 off, 2 on/2off 12 hr shifts as a general maintenance mechanic. He has this tiny "pos" knife that he has to resharpen all the time. He mainly uses it to cut the green netting from round bales to feed his cows, horses, miniature donkeys, 2 buffalo every day or two. His current knife I and his Buddy at work sharpen about every 2-3 weeks for him. I don't have it here to tell you guys what it is/made of. But I figure He could definitely use something that has a ton more edge retention. He hates pocket clip knifes fyi, wants something tiny but sharp.

S110V, M4 or better steel would be nice for edge retention???

Thinking like a Spyderco Dog Tag knife, or about that size/ design.

Let me know what you think of for ideas? Thanks

Here's my Brother with of his two Buddies: Madder and Lightning!

A Spyderco Dragonfly in ZDP-189 would be a nice small knife in a great steel, shouldn't break the bank either.

I wouldn't get the ZDP-189 Dragonfly, too much time sharpening & needs more than average technology (diamonds) to work the edge. I would think a VG10 blade might be a better choice in general. VG10 sharpens up much easier, although it won't hold the edge as well as some steels.

A Delica might be a good choice as well, for a slightly larger blade.

A Ritter Mini Grip, Mini Grip in S30v, +1 on the DF, lots of inexpensive options. I know the Mini Grips are bigger, but so much more capable.

Only reason I suggested is that the OP said he did the sharpening for the brother and wanted a steel that had an edge that lasted a long time, mentioned S110v too.

If the OP wants a small blade in S110v, the Spyderco Native 5 comes in a limited version that has S110v, but it's a bit pricier than the Dragonfly.

That Dog tag thing is a bit small you be useful other then keychain/back-up.
Try a BM Mini Griptilian 555-1 or 556-1 with the G10 handles and S20V steel; pretty solid set up.

The steel doesn't have to be super razor sharp to cut the plastic netting wrap... just be able to hold up for a very long time. Having to sharpen his small knife gets annoying for me/ his buddy.

Get him a case sodbuster Jr in cv or a gec bullnose .
The sodbuster is the epitome of a farmers knife.

In a slipjoint, I would give a hearty +1 for the bullnose! O1 steel that takes a nice edge and holds it, and good finish and ergos.
For a locking folder, a would agree that a mini grip is a good choice. Also consider a spyderco chaparral:thumbup:

I agree with the Case Sodbuster Jr. Another good one would be the SAK Pioneer or Farmer.

Unfortunately my Brother and I get our fat fingers from our Father who wears size 24 rings.. :o

I've personally noticed that I don't like small folders that the blade doesn't stick out much since both of us keep extremely short fingernails. I personally can't get half of folders open :( I do like the Spyderco loop to open... I've got a new PM2 in Blurple on the way :) Absolutely nothing against other makers fyi.

So I'd at least like to go that hardness for his knife.

I'll see if I can steal it from him this weekend to show you guys what he's using now... I just know that the steel in it doesn't hold up the way he needs. Keep the ideas coming! I greatly appreciate it guys.

I think I remember him saying he likes super small knives because he jumps in/out of his bobcat, and his tractors a ton daily n hates getting pinched when he carries larger knifes in his front pocket fyi.

I know, I know.. He's a pain the ass. But he's a damn good guy!

A Spyderco Manix 2 would probably fit the bill perfectly. You can deploy and fold it with gloves on, S30V is excellent steel and a good balance of edge retention/toughness. It is available with a partially serrated blade too, if cutting lots of rope and twine it can be handy sometimes... personal preference. It can hold up as a hard use EDC, has a great locking mechanism and has grippy G-10 scales. He could ditch the pocket clip if he wants and carry in pocket, its not too thick and it pockets nice...... Its a win of a knife under $100 :D

well the sodbuster and bullnose blades stick out enough that you can just grab them , but another option would be a small opinel, they have no tention on the blade and take no force to open.

You could also try getting him a small neck knife ( extremely handy when worn outside the shirt because all it takes is one pull and the knife is out , and if you use a bead chain you can't get strangled by it )

Anything with serates isn't going to work.. Can't resharpen those personally. I've tried on a few knives, but never really the same afterwards. Need to stick to a regular blade, I know he likes straighter edged blades; but that really limits knife selection. He would never wear a neck knife. Hell, He doesn't even like wearing necklaces at all.

Thinking a Spyderco Manix or something of the sorts with a REALLY good edge retention steel?!
