Ideas for working knife EDC?

Lots of options from everyone, but the Alpha Dorado wouldn't be a bad choice. I use mine regularly, it's plenty sturdy imo.

So far I'm brooding about Spyderco Delica or Buck Alpha Dorado
No comment on the Buck, being I don't own one. But in my experience the Benchmade Griptilian or Mini-Griptilian are higher quality than similar-priced Spyderco products. The Griptilian is a bit on the bulky side and pushing the $60 limit, so I recommend the Mini-Griptilian.

Of course there are thousands of other knives that would suit your needs just fine too.

If bulk and weight are factors, I especially recommend the AG Russell FeatherLite.

Happy Shopping,

Mini grip could be good, never had a Benchmade though.

Otherwise, it looks like a salty spyder to me:D

But more ideas are very welcome, should be a knife you can drop from time to time without ruining the handle etc, so- STURDY:thumbup:

I recommend the Mini Grip, especially after your handle comment. It's a very sturdy little knife that takes abuse without showing much wear at all, with the exception of the clip.

I don't own a Spyderco currently, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with one of those either.

I own several models of both delica and benchmade grip and mini grip including Ritter M-2 HS, Cabellas D2 mini grip, delicas in steel, Frn etc. To say the benchmade is better than the spyderco is silly. They are both great knives with the Spyderco's having better steels in VG10 and ZDP 189, and the ritter grip is, the ritter grip. Only the mini grip has metal scales, the delica does under the FRN, or you can get it in Steel, You can also get the Spyderco Delica and Endura with a "wave" if you like. The Grip's don't have that option. Overall the Spyderco's have a bit of an edge, but if you like one more the other, get it. They are both up to most tasks you will ask of them. Joe

Like Mastiff, I own, carry, and use Delicas, Grips, and mini-Grips in several styles. My work EDC (warehouse) is a D4. It is tough enough to stand being dropped onto a concrete floor from 10-15 feet in the air with absolutely no problems.

Mine is a ZDP D4, but if you're looking for a "tough" blade rather than a "hard" blade, the VG-10 D4 might be a better choice. ZDP is very hard steel and holds a great edge, but it may not be as tough (meaning impact resistant) as VG-10. I have read about some chipping issues others have had with ZDP-189 when they've hit something hard while cutting.

I also carry a Cabelas mini-Grip in D2 from time to time. It's a great blade, but the D4 is more comfortable in my hand for a variety of jobs because of it's longer handle. I'm also not sure how well the mechanics of the AXIS lock would stand up to being dropped onto concrete from the height at which I work (and drop things).

I agree with the several comments above. You can't go wrong with either a mini-grip or a delica. I personally have both. I find myself carry the delica 4 wave around the house since the handle is a bit thinner, but I find myself carry the mini-grip out of the house. At times, I just carry both. I liked the mini-grip so much that I went ahead and bought the ritter mini-grip as well!

Probably a mini-grip in that garish yellow colour! Easy to find when lost though:thumbup:

On e-bay yesterday I came across an obsolete Gerber knife from the 1980s and this might do if it's cheap enough:D

It's called a Gerber Vulcan is about 3.5 closed and has chequered rubber grips, lockback. Anybody heard of it? If it was made a couple of decades ago then hopefully the quality is superior to the current Gerber offerings?

Tons of options out there. I recently got a Benchmade Vex. I am impressed with everything about it. G10 handles, heavy duty liner lock. Big Sypdie hole to open with ease. Can't remember the steel off hand but it does hold an edge for a long time. The best feature is the pocket clip. It is designed for easy pull out. All around a great value.

This one goes for about $62 (as much as it looks like it, it is not a switchblade!).

I have that model and even though I think it makes a nice light and slim EDC, I wouldn't call it tough at all. There a bunch of better choices if you want a tough knife.

The new Enduras and Delicas are tougher than they used to be and they used to be pretty darn tough. For under $70, the Endura seems like the best choice. I have a Pacific Salt that is like an older Endura 3. I prefer the Endura 3 to the new 4 because it is more comfortable and lighter in weight. The Endura 4 has a strength advantage.

If you can handle the extra size and weight, the DP D'allara is a REALLY strong knife but it is bulky and heavy. The G-10 Cara Cara is an amazing knife for the money but it is pretty heavy as well. If you had said under $30, the Cara Cara would have been my first choice.

I can highly recommend the Delica 4, as I have used it for similar tasks. Mine is a waved, which I also highly recommend for extremely easy one-handed opening. Another good thing is that you aren't paying an arm and a leg, so if it does ruin, it wouldn't be THAT big of a deal.
