Identification question

- Obtain a Custom at a Knife show through Lottery
- Obtain from one of Hinderer's approved Dealers ( http://www.rickhindererknives.com/rick-hinderer-dealer-list/ )
- And as always, IF it seems to good to be true - it probably is so, avoid those sites where the word "Custom" is bantied about and misapplied.
Enjoy!:)

Thank you.

- Obtain a Custom at a Knife show through Lottery - Check :) From Blade 2012, it has working finish, blade doesnt look quite hollow ground though, maybe a little

- Obtain from one of Hinderer's approved Dealers - Check :) From a gun show, stonewash finish, FFG.

Not sure if this will help clear things up. Rob and I were talking a week or so ago and the subject of "Customs" came up.
Robs exact words and my description were one and the same, the descriptive terms used were Hollow ground (vs FFG) and sharpened by Rick, usually somewhat shiney. The assumption in the ground/sharpened part of the sentence was IF Rick ground the blade then Rick probably completed the sharpening.
IF the concern IS - Someone is looking to buy a "Custom" Hinderer and they DO NOT want to risk being misled, I think (or I wouldn't have said it) it's best to either get the "Custom" directly from the horses stable (lottery) OR go to an approved dealer either of which IF they designate the knife a "Custom" then rest assured it is.
BUT from just looking at one, the points raised in the conversation with Rob are the visual cues that come to mind.
Now, perhaps it would be best to narrow the question which would narrow the answer.
Is there a particular knife in question that is being described as a Custom and there are concerns?

I believe a little confusion about the term "custom" comes by way of common speech and not specific knife statements.
If I customize my vehicle or my knife it is "custom" or "customized" in a manner of speaking. If a manufacturer produces something they can choose to call it as they see fit, say "prototype" or "custom".

Also, to be clear, Hinderer knives is not a huge operation. Huge quality and huge reputation, but only a handfull of people make these knives. So in a sense, they are all a bit "custom".
But what do I know?

If Rick and crew call it a custom, I will call it as such. That's the only definite way to be certain.
Yes, hollow grinds and Satin are things to look for in a true, deemed as such, created by Rick custom. But I will not go so bold as to say all are one way or another.

All true. Safest bet is, Who is designating the knife a "Custom". IF it is Rick/Rob OR one of their Authorized Dealers - Bank.
All else, I'd be looking for at least the visual cues sited and probably quite a bit more.

Agree, I think that is the safest bet.

For the record, I have seen authorized dealers get it wrong so I wouldn't "bank" on that either.

That is possible but I would imagine a Buyer would then have recourse against an "Authorized Dealer" to make good on the Deal or face a legal action for Material Misrepresentation.
Considerably more difficult to seek remedy from a private transaction or a web based transaction albeit PayPal does offer redress but who needs that noise.
I am happy to stick with my lowly production EDC's, I love them and they love me and the headaches are minimal:)
IF I am ever blessed with a "Custom" Hinderer it will be if I am fortunate enough to win the opportunity to buy one at the Lottery !
