Hello there, I was at a local flea market over the weekend and saw this nifty little hatchet at an old fishermans table. It was a case full of antique sort of things and this hatchet caught my eye. Unfortunately I didn't have the $40 to buy it right then and there, but I wanted to double check that it is from the time erra that he claims.

I would really like to have something this size for personal use and even as a keepsake. He says it's never been sharpened before and perhaps even never been used. It would be nice to go back next weekend and get it if it turns out to be worthwhile. Here are the two quick pics that I took with my phone:

This is the Hatchet inside the case:

This is the label that was on the handle:

Any and all help would be appreciated, J.

i am not sure, but if you send a PM to briangandrews he will probably know. he is is my profile under friends lists.

Thanks for the help fellas

I have to run right now but I will be sure to check back with the information that ya'll gave :)

Blue Grass tools from the Belknap Hardware Co. If I could see the head out of the sheath I could give you more details. It looks like a small hatchet that was meant to be used to split kindling for the wood cook stove in the kitchen of days gone by. looks like a nice piece.
I hope this helps. Roy

Or a "childs hatchet"
or a "salesman sample"
or a hatchet "used by wives to cut up chicken in the 40's"
I've seen ALL the descriptions:D

The small hatchets seem to command a good price on EBAY
Depending on the maker and model of course
The Craftsman 1940's small ones go for about 25-60 (last time I looked)
I'd buy it for 40, myself..If I saw it in an antique shop:thumbup:
Having the sheath probably adds another 20% at least:thumbup:..IMHO

Thanks for all the help guys

That guess and then the link confirmed it was the real McCoy.

I hope it's still there this weekend. If I do get it I wonder if I should use it or display it

Gee whiz, I think I actually have one of these! I may be wrong about the make, but the logo looks a lot like what I remember there being on an old hatchet I have owned for as long as I can remember. The one I have is VERY well used, it has been beaten up bad, no longer sports any logo, but still works as good as new. If memory serves it was my Dad's, but I got it so long ago, the time period in which I procured it is really blurry. I would need to dig mine out of the shed for comparison, but I wknow it doesn't have a loop hole in the handle like the one in your picture.
