Looking for info on this stainless steel knife/tool I got from my dad. I think it’s from the 1970’s, not too old. The plastic handle slides from one end to the other with a locking mechanism. One way it’s like a pry bar, the other is a knife. It’s missing parts I’d like to replace on the handle, just don’t know what they looked like. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to Bladeforums.

That certainly is an unusual item. Is there any writing on it?

.

It looks like it might be an adjustable duct (as in air duct installation) tool. Never seen one like that. Why do you think that anything is missing?

On the front and back of the handle where the screws are there is obviously space for something to fit. May have had like guards there, I’d like to know what they looked like so I can try to get some or reproduce them.

It's an adjustable Dive Knife / Abalone knife combination. That's the reason for all the serrated sections, line cutter, and pry bar. Also for the use of 18/8 steel. These were a tiny bit popular late 70's - mid 80's. There was a hatchet / knife /pry bar version sold through Soldier of Fortune magazine back then too. Most were by small start up companies that I don't remember. FES Germany also sold a light duty hunting model with a green handle back then too.

The design is partly based on an old mill knife design.

Many times this design had flat springs on the sides to help stiffen the blade in the handle, it might be something like that.

It has two curved springs inside the handle that hold the blade fairly tight but still allow it to slide.
Thanks for your help!

I see this, a post with an improperly formatted link.

Clicking on the link displays this series of low resolution pictures that are 320x240 pixels in size.

The seems to be a problem with the new forum software that isn't processing links properly. It started with the forum migration anyhow.

A cool but seemingly unsuccessful dive knife. There are typically two types of dive knife , the chisel or pry bar style and the multiple edge pointy usually clip point style. This is an attempt at merging both types in one . Pretty cool!

Is that a sharp chisel on the squared end?

No, it has about a 2mm flat across the tip. Doesn’t seem good for prying anything very tight. The knife blade isn’t very sharp either. And doesn’t seem dull from use, just never brought to a sharp edge, though it could be sharpened I’m sure.

The low res is probably my fault. My iPhone pics are big, and I’m not adept at posting. So I chose the small size when I sent them to imgur

Now I'm working on my PC instead of iPhone. Sorry if I made a mess of this whole post, if the DP's are from me, I don't know. Looks like when I respond to a post it creates a new post well below the original. I did go back and edit some of my posts shortly after I posted originally. That may have caused some problem?
Anyway, thanks for all your inputs!
I'm in Washington State, PT fyi
I can repost the pics in a larger size if anyone wants that. I don't know about the "improper formatting". If anyone can give me tips on how to post better, please do.
:)
