Hello guys, I just bought a Kukri and not know much about. The store told me it is from Nepal and it is a Kukri that is all he knows. After online research, I realize Kukri is actually very very deep. There are several major houses that produce them. Gurkha, Himalaya Import, Tora.....etc. Which confused me because somehow they all look essentially the same !!!

I wish I have done a lot more research before buying. I wish I buy from a store that knows his/her stuff they are selling. It is hard to find a knife store any where and its price isn't bad so I kind of did an impulse buy on the spot.

Could you please tell me which house of Kukri do I own? or it is a pure garbage from an unknown maker?
How do you tell different houses of Kukri when encounter one?

I love how it feel in hand, so I don't think it is gonna be my last one.

Thanks!

Most khukuris from one of the khukuri houses will be a decent tool. Himilayan Imports is the best one - no questions there. They have the best build quality and best customer service and care for the costumer. I've owned 4 khukuris from 3 of the main houses over there and never had a complaint about the steel on any of them. They're all good 5160 that is tempered well and will take a ridiculous beating. The biggest difference you'll see is that the handles on the cheaper ones can have flaws or can come loose from the blades.

Yours kinda looks like one of the lower end ones. If it were from HI, it would have a mark engraved near the handle that identifies the maker. But that doesn't mean you can't beat on it and have fun with it! I have one from the Gurka house that has survived smashing concrete and cutting through heavy aluminum pipes. They're absurdly tough blades even when done poorly.

It looks like Himalayan import. But the lack of makers mark is odd. I would suggest asking in the HI subforum!
