Moved to Shop Talk where there may be people who can help you identify your anvil.

You may need to provide more than a single pic and include pics of any markings or areas of interest in order for proper identification.

Oh man, that thing is in rough shape. If it has good rebound, and you are a competant welder (you say that you are) you might be able to get that thing back into shape for forging knives, but as is I would pass unless its extremely cheap.

No no no no!! Do not weld on that anvil. It's a colonial anvil. Not a mousehole. Gah. Lmao.

It's a FANTASTIC anvil and should be left as is. It's collectible but, I'd use it for forging!!! Just don't use it or striking.

If you need a flat block for straightening if just get a big piece of RR tine.

That anvil is 200+ years old. :D

I'd have to agree- there are plenty of anvils around, this one should probably be preserved as is.
It's....not that good for forging, I wouldn't use it if there was anything else around, anyway. Good corners and a flat face do wonders for your quality, though a good smith can do good work on any anvil.
Go to the ABANA website and go to your local group's meeting- I guarantee you there'll be better anvils for sale, and if there's a collector there, he might give you a big wad of cash for that one.

I recognize that anvil. It's the one that The Roadrunner used to squash Wiley Coyote.

I hope there isn't a forum rule against being a bit of a smart ass.

Hey Brian I thought the colonial anvil was the design pattern that was used not the brand of anvil I guess you could say. I may be way off dont know too much about them. Regardless shows how old that thing is.

I got this anvil for 25$. I am just getting started and literally know nothing about anvils and blacksmith work, but I thought this anvil looked a little older than old ones I have seen on you tube. I can barely make out some fragments of letters, and what looks like the shape of some sort of shield. I will get more pics up soon to help with identifying. thanks for all the help so far.
