Identify this knife!

Zach, I had one of the Buck reps have me send a knife to them in care of him (like you're going to do) and I think that helps get them done much quicker. Seemed like no time at all before I had it back.

Looks like you've got an in with Buck now!

See I love that about buck! and I never knew it! I knew if for somereason if my Buck broke they would fix it but I didn't know that they would fix somthing like this. I can't wait to send it out and get it back so I can start using it. Thanks for everything everyone ecspecially CJ Buck and everybody else that has given me information!

-Zach

CJ is your best bet... :)

That looks like JB Weld. Not worth trying anything on. I'd bet that the OEM grip is hidden somewhere underneath it...but after looking at the blade close, I'm thinking it was in a fire, and the grip burned off, hence the JB Weld...

I agree with the Chicken, that looks like JB Weld. Someone just never finished it out all nice and neat like one of us Buck Knuts might have.

It would be just like CJ to just send Zack back a brand new knife, But I think if it was me, I would want that one back.

Yeah, the phenolics probably got busted up somehow, or maybe it just needed a fatter grip for larger hands.

Will be really interesting to see the outcome.

It is an interesting 119 for sure,i'll be interesed in knowing if it was in a fire, chances are the temper is gone out of it and it might not hold an edge very long.lol

I agree w/ you guys.Its been in a fire.I'd want the 1991 blade back w/ a original handle and sheath if possible.DM

See I know alot of people wouldn't want a new knife, but I'd rather if he decides to send me a new one, get a new one, maybe its because I'm dumb, but the only way I would keep this knife, over a new knife, is if the original had sentimental value to me. Which it doesn't. Although I like this knife if possible I'd take a new one in a heartbeat. But its up to CJ Buck and whatever he wants to do.

I was looking at the pic below, and thinking..."How did the phenolic spacers survive a fire???"...The answer is: they didn't...

012-1.jpg

The spacers are JB Weld, too...Look at the bubbles in it...and the entire guard has been ground down along with the JB Weld... :(

Well, I suppose it could be disassembled and a new grip and spacers installed, and the whole knife buffed out...

Especially since it has so much sentimental value...

Why did you say that?

Because I'm sure Buck doesn't want people going to flea markets and garage sales looking for old beat up Buck knives that they would send in for "warranty" and get brand new replacement knives in exchange...

...But it would be logical that a valued tool, damaged in a fire, and sent in to Buck for whatever warranty work could be performed, would receive a more favorable decision as to whether replacement is warranted...

You can see the logic, can't you??? ;)

It's along the lines of "you can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar"... :D

Well for your information I had no intentions of sending in to get repaired untill I came to this forum and CJ Buck told me to send it to him, if you read the whole post maybe you would know that. And I wasn't looking for old beatup buck knives at the flea market, I went there to look and happened to find a knife that I really liked without knowing what had happened to it, not knowing I could send it back and have it fixed or replaced. So don't think that I got it strictly for that reason or that I'm going to go around looking for more, this is the last knife that I'm going to be buying for a while because I'm not going to be spending all my money on knives. But I don't like how you come in assuming you know that I went and got this just so I could send it back and get a new knife. I am sending it back to get fixed or replaced, thats true, but only because CJ Buck told me too. Read before you just say things when you don't know what really happened.

You were the one who said he'd take a new one in a heartbeat. And someone who bought an old beat up knife intending to get a new one is exactly how you come across.

Have a nice day... :D

I don't see anywhere in this young mans posts where he asked for anything but information. CJ chimed in and offered to fix it for him and someone else said they might send him a new knife back. The young man said he had no attachment to the knife, bought it because that's what he could afford.

I see no where that indicates to me he bought it in with the intentions of getting a new one for it, only that he would be happy to take CJ's unsolicited offer. If that meant being sent a new knife, terrific, but he asked for nothing but information to begin with.

Have a nice day.:D

Wow, This thread kind of took a nose dive since I last peeked.

Zack, I apologize if my comment that CJ might just send you a new one caused caused this. I said that because that would be just like what the Buck family might do, and has done in numerous cases.

You are the new guy here and most all of us that have been here a while, might already have a 119 and would be more interested in seeing how this one turns out after coming back from Buck.

Heck, I would have bought it in a heartbeat had I have found it. and like you, with no intention of sending it to Buck for any kind of replacement.

If I was in CJ's shoes, I too would be interested in seeing just how someone managed to salvage and continue using one of Buck's knives.

Now, as far as people finding/buying old Bucks, just to do a warranty thing. The way I see that, a knife is busted, whether the old owner sends it in, or the new owner does. Buck's warranty is good, if it qualifies for waranty.

I am betting that many here have done this before. A couple I sent in, came in a lot of knives I bought one time. Buck either repaired or replaced.

Since then, I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of Buck knives, and a huge amount of that directly from the custom shop.. Buck knows this happens, but the good will they build is worth it to them, as they know that somewhere down the road that person will most likely be buying another Buck knife.

So,,,get that one sent in and I for one can't wait to see or hear the results.

Now I gotta get back down stairs to my cooking. I have a big fat Chicken in the rotisserie thing. :D

Great shot Pack! I missed that at my first reading.

Seems like a normal Buck Forums thread to me...Except 334dave hasn't chimed in yet... :)

Who you trying to fool??? You couldn't make a Bisquick biscuit...

CJ, in his post, said he would make it shiny...If Buck were to re-do the entire knife, that would be cool, but would also be contrary to Buck's stated policy of not working on modified knives...But it's CJ's company, and his Forum, he can do whatever he sees fit, so that's cool too... :)

But it could be kind of annoying to the guy who has come here and said that they just bought a Buck knife on eBay with skull & crossbones or shamrock or Barbie scales and the auction seller said it had a Buck lifetime warranty and would this be covered by warranty??? And were told "No"...

But, if everybody wants to dump on me, that's cool too...It takes the heat off 334dave for a while... :D

Totally different situation and there was no reason at all to dump on Zach. He came here looking for advise on how to do it himself with no other motive.

Also, I put the knife in warm soapy water to soak and see what that would do, is there anything I can do to bring back the nice black handle? I can post pictures if you would like to see the knife and the markings and everything.

You could try black shoe polish, I've used it on the handles of some Antique pocket knives I've restored, but then, I don't handle them that much so I'm not really sure how it will wear off on your hands so it might not be such a great idea here.

Dumps, Bisquick.....

Now ya gots me craving some dumplins to go with the chicken :D:D

Nah...you have a good point Trax...
