Can someone possibly identify this wood.
My father in law gave it to me. He said he thinks it can from Texas.

All I know is it sinks like a rock in water.
I sanded it just a bit and applied tung oil to the right side.
The left is natural and seems to be somewhat yellow in color.

The stain around the edge seemed to soak in pretty deep.
I didn't apply the stain and would need to be cut off.

Any info would be great.
Thanks

I could be way off, but as soon as I saw it I thought it looked like any oak I'e ever used.

Given your description, where it came from and the pics, osage orange is a likely candidate.

Yep, that's what I'm thinking as well. Also, that may not be stain. I've seen knives made with Osage have bi-colored handles due to part of the handle being inside the sheath and the exposed part darken from to exposure to sunlight.

I've never seen mesquite that yellow though. but the grain does look like it. I'd lean Osage though

The color makes me think of mesquite that I've used. It was the first wood that came to mind, looking at the pic anyway.

Well my father in law wants a knife from it but I'm sure I could get s couple knives from it though.

I'm starting to lean towards mesquite just from the grain pattern.
Osage orange grain from the pictures I've seen are a lot tighter.

I'll have to investigate more into it.
Thanks all!

Looks like mesquite. Isn't oak and something isn't just right for it to be osage?

Yes, and end grain shot would help & if osage a fresh sand would show a bright yellow color.
