If it comes down to that, food will be a better currency.

I beg to differ.....

Probably be both, though cartridges will be worthless to those without firearms or firearms chambered for them. Everyone has to eat. I'm only worried about ensuring I have enough .22LR around. Best overall all-around cartridge during such times. I usually have between 10K and 20K .22lr cartridges on hand. Reorder a case or two when I get down to 10K. My goal is to have no less than 100K but closer to 250K .22LR cartridges when I retire so I won't ever have to buy any again. If there's any left when I die, it can go with my rifles.

Who said anything about using them for trade?? :D :D just kidding of course

...and that's a lot of .22's LOL. I have a lot as well...perhaps not quite that many....but more than I think is adequate for what I need them for.

Too bad I can't play your games. If I get caught with an EMPTY .22 shell, I can go to prison.

That's only 6250 cartridges.

If you're going to use them as currency, then it's using them for trade. Not long after Sandy Hook, I picked up a Ruger Standard w/ A100 frame in trade for .22LR that cost me very little (bought before the great "run on .22LR" in 2013). Made out like a bandit at the gunshows that winter and spring. My .22LR ammo I brought for trade would be gone before I got to the entrance door of the shows, regardless of how much or how little I brought.

It was amazing what people would trade for a brick or two of .22LR then. I remember one guy balked at my price. I responded, "no worries, I can take it back home". Then some other guy bought all the ammo we had in our day packs at my price. Once inside the show's venue the first guy hunted me down because he realized I was selling the cheapest .22LR there. I had to tell him it was all gone and that I didn't make it into the show with any of it. He then got pissed off at me. I just told him he had his opportunity earlier when I had it and chose not to take advantage of that opportunity but he could still buy the horrendously expensive bricks for sale by multiple vendors with tables at that show. Those were weird times at gun shows.

I have a savings account only. I refuse to have a checkbook or debit card. I use isolated (like Capital One) credit cards for my purchases.

You might want to rethink this policy and flip it. Based on recent banking law revisions, non-demand accounts such as savings and money markets can be seized by the bank in the event of failure, leaving you with "bank shares" of undetermined value. Also based on revisions to banking laws after the bank runs of the 1930s, savings account withdrawals can be held while checking withdrawals cannot. Finally, there's the fact the interest rates have been lousy on savings accounts for 30 years or so.

As to carrying precious metals, you might want to consider these: easier to carry and they'll allow you to make smaller purchases without buying the store in total:

A coworker/old Army buddy gave me eight 30 round AR1255.56 mags right after Sandy Hook in December. OKC and similar. I didn't own an AR, and he knew it. He just wanted me to have fun. I off loading them for $250 at the next gunshow in January. Normally back then they'd sell for about 40 bucks, but people were acting stupid and the level headed either waited or made out like bandits.

I only have a bank account to receive the monthly direct deposit from the VA for my service connected disability payment. At any given time of the month, my balance will be zero.

Correct, though gold won't be worthless forever - Gresham's Law. The ammo is for keeping what you already have. :)
Biblical prophecy indicates once gold becomes worthless it doesn't recover as a commodity for trade.

With all due respect, I'm not concerned with prophecies.

Smart, IMO. A scholar of history? :D

Those Valcambi bars carry a high premium. I like 1/10 and 1/4 oz coins, personally. You typically can get the premium back on govt issued fractional coins. I am a Schiff fan though, no doubt.

I agree, ammo is a great commodity. Most likely will only go up in price. I stock as much as I can but I have a really limited budget. For my main "battle rifle", the rifle I would grab if anything crazy ever went down, is an AKMS. I've stocked up about 2000 rounds of 7.62x39. Really not much, but that is stuff that I don't shoot. It is high quality stuff FMJBT that is sealed at the case neck and primer for long term storage. I don't have much of my other calibers though. 9mm is the other caliber that is most important to me since my main carry gun is chambered in it. I don't even have 1000rnds right now. Definitely want to get that number up to eventually 10k. I only have 1 .22lr firearm which is a Ruger 22/45. .22lr is really important though, like mentioned above. I would love to have a stash like the one pictured here! That is impressive.

IMO, it wise to get a little bit. With the attempt at banning green-tip 5.56 earlier this year, you never know what they're going to try. I'd view it more as insurance instead of an investment - just like precious metals. You're going to be frustrated if you just get in it to flip/make a profit. The 'weak hands' in the metals market seem to be heading for the exits now. Time will only tell.

Like I said earlier... it really sucks to be a second class citizen (nonviolent felon as of June 2006).

You're a veteran correct? Since you conviction is non violent, I would highly suggest you do whatever you can to get a pardon from the Governor of your state. It may be a little soon right now since you said 2006, but maybe within 5 years you could have a chance. Do everything you can in the mean time, be involved in the community somehow and make sure there is a record of it. Donate to charities whenever you can, keep records of it. Being a vet will help too. Hopefully you can take all of that and save up for a good lawyer, have him present the Governor with all of this stuff that shows you're a good citizen and a decent character. Maybe you can get a pardon eventually. I really feel for you man, I do. I am 26 now and have been into firearms since I was 5 years old. I almost royally screwed that all up on numerous occasions when I was 18-20 years old. I was involved in some really bad stuff. Nothing violent like you, however there were at least 10 times I can recall that I was literally 1 inch away from getting a charge that would have taken my firearm rights away from me. I would have been kicking myself the rest of my life if I had screwed it up. Thankfully I cleaned myself up and go out of the mess I created with no legal troubles. So I hope you can eventually get it all handled.
