Hey guys..i pulled an idiot move today..i had three blades i was going to ht..all 01..i typically put them in my oven and heat them up to 600 and put on pb antiscaling compound..then i bring them up to critical for quench..heres where the idiot move came in..i put them in and left them there..and forgot about them..i got back out there to see they had been soaking at 1500 for 30 minutes..so my question is are they ruined? should i scrap them and count this as a lesson learned..i would really appreciate some of the vast number of you who know more than me chiming in with your thoughts..and kick away..i know i got it coming..thanks Luke

NO WAY! O1 likes a good LOOOOOOONG soak! it was perfect for quenching! O1 will like to soak for 15-20 minutes normally but if you leavit it in for 30-45 it wont be a problem, no adverse effects, it's cool!

The very surface will have lost some carbon and will be oxidized. You will need to grind off a few thou, and you're good to go.

How would it have lost carbon unless the anti-scale had burned off?

You are correct. I misunderstood what I read, as meaning he had heated it up in prep for adding the antiscale, but forgot to do it and then the program ramped up to temp and stayed there. I have done something similar - but that isn't what he did. Oops.

edit:

Oh wait - I did read that right.

I thought I was wrong, but it turns out I was wrong about being wrong. Now my head hurts.

Actually i didnt explain it right either..i forgot to put the antiscale on also..fortunately the edges were a little thick, and i was able to grind several thousandths off to get the scale off..i have quenched and am tempering as we speak..ill check the hardness and test the blades a little but they seem to be ok..thanks again for all the input..later Luke

Should be golden! Like others have said, as long as you had temperature control, you shouldn't have any problems other than the mentioned decarb.

Give yourself a generous decarb allowance, forget doing a file test it that is how you test to see if it hardened, decarb will not skate a file no matter what the underlying metal is

under the decarb is proably the best O-1 you have ever done, as mentioned above, O-1 needs long soaks to reach its full potential
