I think this will be a good thread to use in pointing out people that are so obviously trying to pass a bad deal off onto the unwary buyer. I just was going through the Spyderco listings and came upon this item...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43335&item=2260003071&rd=1

If you read the description and then look at the item...'Knife has been gently used (rope cutting, box opening) and is in excellent condition. some surface scratches from normal wear.' So how do you break the tip off a knife cutting rope and opening boxes. Yah thats what I thought...there should be a way to inform ebay of bad postings like this...Anyhow, I just wanted to warn any of you who might get duped into a deal like this...I sure am glad that I've never fallen for something like this as of yet. :p

you can report it, but the pictures of it are self explanatory - they may have slipped whilst "lightly cutting rope" and hit a rock... or not :D

Seriously though you can report it - but eBay is, and always will be "buyer beware". To report just go to eBay help and you'll find it in there.

Cheers,
Nathan

After reading this thread I emailed the seller through eBay. I stated that the Worker appeared to have lost it's tip (which as any Spydie freak knows is very pronounced on a Worker). Here is his response:

absolutely not! this knife is in PRISTINE condition, and the tip is sharp and perfect! i did not realize that the picture was not clear...thanks-

It still looks broken to me folks. tf

I think the seller is right. Looking at this pic, the light source is from the left, so there is a shadow cast to the right. I think the point is intact, but because of the shadow and the poor contrast of the photo it looks blunted. I DL'd the pic and tried to mess with it in Photoshop, but the picture sucks so it didn't reveal anything. But, I think you're seeing the tip + the shadow. Maybe I'm wrong.

I pull the pic, brightened and enlarged it.The tip is there, the shadow of the blade is makeing it look rounded. The serations do look to be a bit worn.

You're right, on both counts I did the same thing and the tip is definitely intact. Those pictures probably kept the bids down, so, it does illustrate the value of good photos when selling on eBay. So, on that basis, the seller is certainly not one of eBay's "sharpest".

Hugh, if the seller is really in Queens, and they purchased it locally, that may very well be what they paid for it. Checked Spyderco prices in my part of the state when I first became interested in them. Full MSRP, plus sales tax, was the norm. That's why I stick with this forum, NGK, and eBay as my sources for Spydies. I would bet prices ares pretty much the same in NYC as here and, considering that my '94 catalog shows a $99.95 MSRP for the Worker, it's not too far fetched to think it might have gotten a bit higher before it was retired.

On the other hand, the clown that just listed TWENTY separate auctions for black Dodo's with a starting bid of $140 and change, and a BIN of $200 on each, definitely needs their meds adjusted.

Any reply from Kudzu74 concerning your initial charge of idiocy/dishonesty? Just wondering, you started the thread.

When I saw this listing, I checked on the seller's feedback comments and found praise from people who had bought knives from him saying that the knife they received was as advertised or better than advertised. So I figured it was a bad pic.

Well, even I am one of the idiots of ebay it seems...though I definitely felt a thread on this matter was worthy...not just specifically because of that one auction but in general...sorta a FYI for those newer enthuasists. I have always pushed to make sure in any dealings I have here or there that the buyer is always satisfied with the trade or purchase. Though I have seen and heard some bad dealings on the ebay side...and have even had to deal with some bad sellers...in which I was fortunate to come out on the winning side of things. But I would prefer to make sure others do not end up on the losing side of a bad deal. Hence the whole motivation behind this thread. I'm glad to see some of you go a little further than the typical person to figure out if its a correct listing or not. Though the average Joe doesn't do picture enhancements. I've not had much success other than the forums with replies to inquires about knives being sold. Anyhow, I do like to see the responses to when I stick my finger in the pond and start to wiggle it back and forth. :p

Hey Kudzu, I know the feeling. I still can taste the shoe leather from my post when the first "Byrd" showed up on eBay. :footinmou Heck, I halfway expected Sal to post a reply to this thread saying the price of the Dodo had doubled effective yesterday. ;)

Weirdest Spydie I have seen on Ebay. Said it was a "customized" one of a kind..... thank God!

On popular demand, maybe Sal will consider reintroducing this "unique" Spydie into production ;)

:D :D :D aaaaahehehe ...
into production - for Noth Korea police.. :p

Actually, that knife'd probably tear through boxes. Kinda Dodo-ish. Poor Police though...

A person ought to be kicked in the balls for doing that to a knife. I could mabey understand screwing around with an old FRN Endura beater, but a Police model? You just don't do it. Even if half the blade was broken off, they should have been able to come up with something better. Does anyone know if that thing actually sold?

Even worse, I've seen an auction for a carbon fiber Civilian that somebody had "waved." They chopped right through the hole and attached the clip half-assed on the other end of the handle. Some of you might be into that, but I hate to see a good knife buggered up.
