I see your location is in China, so I think I would be safe in assuming your question is to really to find out how successful you would be in making a clone of an expensive knife and selling it.

Instead of focusing on producing a clone, why not come up with your own design and put more emphasis on the QUALITY of construction and materials used in the product you are producing. If the quality is there, the majority of people would be willing to pay for your work, regardless of where it was made. Look at the iphone for example: over 250 million have been sold and ALL were made in China. People still buy it partly, because of the quality of manufacturing.

Just my opinion and personal advice. The majority of "expensive" knives are expensive because they (the manufacturer) made the decision to use high quality materials and have very stringent quality control in place.

The main reason people don't like items made in China is because they lack quality in both materials and construction. Why not take this opportunity and turn that around?

By the way, the paramount factor why people would refuse to buy a clone (regardless of quality) is the fact that it is a clone. Knife collectors tend to be some of the loyalist and supportive people when it comes to designers and manufacturers. When you clone something, you are ripping off the designer and the manufacturer for your own profit.

I assume you're in a position to manufacturer knives on a somewhat medium to large scale. You have no idea how I often wish I had access to the materials and equipment to do something like that.

Put something original and high quality out there, and you may be surprised how collectors and enthusiasts will recognize and recommend your product. To prove my point, you could come up with something and submit it to the pass around forum/circuit available on this forum where you can get some hands-on and honest feedback.

Making and selling clones may be a successful, albeit illegal, venture for you, but I doubt it would be as successful as designing and selling your own high-quality ORIGINAL work. Plus, you would definitely create brand loyalty with repeat customers. I think I've said enough on this point.

In case english isn't your first or native language, I translated what I wrote above into Chinese. I'm not trying to insult you, I just really want my point to get across:

Never. Fake people buy fake goods.

If it's something you really want, work hard, save your money and have pride of ownership everytime you pull it out of your pocket.

MDQBox said it very well. I will not buy a fake of a quality product to save money, ill get the real deal or ill go without. However if you made an original design with good steel and quality workmanship I would consider it even though I typically avoid Chinese made products because the quality is poor. From your pictures in other posts it appears you are capable of quality work so keep the quality, come up with an original design and have the price point that the Chinese products are famous for and you will have a winner with people who need to save the coin. Your product does not have to be an outright copy to target the same type of knife user.

In a nutshell?
No.
Nobody wants some crappy rip off of a great knife.
So the question is, exactly what knife are you ripping off?

Why? A particular knife isn't something I have to have to live. If I can't justify spending what the real thing costs I just don't buy it and furthermore your fake isn't the real deal so just where's the satisfaction in owning it?

Two of the knives i want more then anything (when it come to knives) is a Benchmade model 42 gold and the model 49, most likely i will never get them, but would i buy a "ripoff" ? Not in a milion years, even if it was identical to the real deal down to a molecular level would i knowingly buy a known fake.

Well, you do have two kidneys, but you can survive on just one. Just sayin...

Copies as in fakes with the legit manufacture's name...No. Knives that have similarities to other knives but have Chinese manufacture's name, such as Enlan, Navy, Ganzo etc...Yes.

People,

The topic of counterfeit knives -- be they from China or Pakistan or America or anywhere else -- is a legitimate topic and we should be able to discuss it in a civil way without hurling insults. Whether you like 'em or hate 'em, these knives are in the market and we need to discuss them in a thoughtful and meaningful way. If you can't do that, then please go somewhere else because in that case YOU become the troll.

The real truth is that there are a lot of people out there that do and will buy those knives, if they didn't there wouldn't be a market for them and as most of us know there is a huge market.

It's a very big world out there outside of BF....

As to the original question, my personal answer is no, I do not buy counterfeit or "homage" products.

I try to be thoughtful in how I spend my money. It's about more than filling my belly... or my knife drawer. Professionally, I am a new-product developer and an engineer, designer, and inventor. I make my money creating new products. And so I understand especially the damage that counterfeit products do. I also understand wha it takes to create a new product... and it's not just money; we pour our lives, our emotions, our sweat, our tears, our blood (sometimes figuratively and sometimes literally) into our products. Our products become our children in a way. And so I will not spend my money supporting and rewarding that.

When you spend your money, you are rewarding the chain that brought the product to you. I like to be thoughtful about who I reward and why.
