And you know there's something I don't understand at all.
People are always asking about the durability of the old WW II knives and their modern counterparts and how they hold up under different conditions.
These knives are war horses imo as they survived desert, forest, swamp and jungle during WW II, let alone Korea and Nam, as well as what the troops threw at them.
AFAIAC it proves that knives don't have to be sharpened prybars to do their job and do it very effectively!!

Indin word for lousy hunter.

Agreed, Yvsa!

Those knives were used and tested in real conditions. That says something all by itself.

Peace,

does the pilot survival have the same tang construction as the usmc f/u ?

Seb

Seb,
I'm not sure of the specifics you are looking for, but the Pilot's survival knife and the 7" fighting/utility bot feature full lenght tang construction with metal but caps and leather washer handles. The F/U knife has a pinned on but cap, and the Pilots survival has a steel "hex nut" screwed on to the tang.

Does this help?

Yes. So the tang of the pilot survival narrows at the guard like the F/U ?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages of either pinned or screwed butt?

Seb

I don't have the F/U, but I do have a Pilot's Survival. Looking at the F/U, and after using the Pilot's knife, I would think that the Pilot's model has the stronger pommel. It's a large hex nut, basically, that's been threaded onto the tang, as opposed to the F/U's rather thin buttcap that's pinned in place. Then again, I've never heard of either model failing at the pommel.

I read about an early model of a F/U (don't know which brand) being issued with screwed butt as well, and the pinned variant being intruduced due to pommel breakage. The hex nut seems to have the advantage of easy handle maintenance, though.
