If I have no money for a Busse and if A2 sucks? What options for a survival knife?

I think the OP got bored and went off to watch some porn but just in case he's still listening......

Here's something in the maker's section that caught my eye just recently.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=795202

It will cost you all of $125. In GBP that's what... 80 quid? Not much really.....

Why not pick it up and try 1095 out for yourself? I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

Otherwise why not follow the lead of one of your country's most famous outdoorsmen, Ray Mears, and invest in a Gransfors Small Forest Axe or Wildlife hatchet. I know for a fact you can pick one up right in the UK for around 50 quid.

That will do you very nicely, mated with a Mora or even a SAK for that matter.

If that outchopped a Busse it sure wasn't one of the FBM's.... FFBM, NMFBM etc.

Or even a Basic 11. ;)

Heck no! BWM vs Esee Junglas it was a "no contest." Too bad, I really wanted to like it too. The Junglas won't outchop a very sharp hatchet for that matter.

Either will the FBM, FFBM, NMFBM. I hear you but in the end they're very large, fancy handled, sharpened peices of good steel. That's all - there's no magic power that they possess. :)

The NMFBM is a lot more than that, you would have to swing one to understand. Jerry Busse out did himself with that knife, it the closest thing to perfection there is IMO.

The BWM was never marketed as a chopper, and it's really not.

Just for kicks & giggles, what makes a NMFBM superior in chopping to a quality made, sharp hatchet?

I don't like packing a hatchet but I think they'd out chop a knife, even a Busse NMFBM which costs a 100 times more too (tons more $ anyway - not sure exactly on the math) .

It's the highly optimised design that just puts it over the top chopping wise, convex blade grind that is hand ground and hand finished down to a very fine edge. There is more to it than that, but there is nothing like it that is a knife.

Yes it's not cheap, but then nothing that is really worth it ever is. :)

You base your opinion of 1095 being junk on a video you saw years ago, made by someone you dont know and a knife that you dont the maker of.

With a thought process like that it wont be a broken knife that messes you up in a survival situation.

That is for sure. What a refreshing reply.

maybe 250 to 300? $

In that price range you can purchase Busse.

Depending on what size you were looking for, there are a lot of Busse in that price range on the Busse exchange right here on good old Bladeforums.

If you go a bit higher, you can grab a Basic11 with a 11 inch blade of INFI goodness.

There are some great prices on Busse knives on the exchange right now (mid sized users with sheaths for 300).

Also, Scrapyard and Swamprat both make virtually indestructible knives out of different steels SR101, and SR77 come to mind. (both are sub-family companies of Busse, often called BusseKin). What makes their knives so great and tough is that they have really nailed the heat treatment and cryo treatment for each steel to really get the best performance out of them.

that said, A2 is a great steel. Busse used to use A2 in some of their earlier knives, and it is great stuff when properly heat treated.

Just because Noss can break a knife made out of A2 does not mean that A2, or a knife from Barkriver is not good stuff.

1095 is also a great knife steel, and very tough when heat treated properly.

ESSE (formerly Rat Cuttlery) makes their knives out of 1095, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. They are tough stuff, and have an awesome warranty (you break it, they will replace it).

Bravo1 will be coming out in 3V and 35VN in the near future according to Mike's production schedule. Problem solved.

I found the BWM to chop 2 to 3 inch branches and small trees without a problem. It batons with the best and still slice. For around $300, its one of the best overall blades Busse put out along with the NMFBM, their best chopper.

To repeat myself - I bought the BWM & Junglas in the same week. The BWM was a joke - full covex my *ss. It has a tiny obtuse V grind on it and bent foliage when slicing. The Junglas was like a razor and and tree topped the same stuff the Busse couldn't cut. Junglas came with the an awesome adjustable kydex sheath that would cost well over $100 to have made too.

NO contest based on my experience.

Has the OP ever posted what knife he was buying. I'm too lazy to go through 5 pages of posts again. :)

I hope you aren't rating blades based on factory edges...... But that's what I sounds like to me. ;)

I don't recall seeing any such post.

I think that the OP should buy an ESEE-5 or a Becker BK-2 if he is so concerned about a knife breaking on him. They are strong & tough and are not likely to break unless they are used in a ridiculous manner.

Of course I am. I paid over $400 for the BWM w/o a sheath and it came "paper tearing" sharp. :(

Jerry has since addressed this in his sub-forum and told people to send their knives back in (another $20+ bucks shipping & insurance to have them properly re-sharpened. He also promptly locked the thread when people turned up the heat.

I know you're a die hard INFI/Busse owner and I respect your right to be so. I'm only sharing my experieince and other than this disagreement, I value your opinions, videos and input in the community - a lot! :D

I bought my BWM from a bladeforum member and it can razor sharp. It didn't have a problem chopping a small tree. I understand your concern about an imperfect blade. I bought a SAR 3 from Busse and had to return it to get it razor sharp. I'm sure those days for Busse are long gone.

I'd recommend a Lightsaber.
The survival blade of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as 1095 blade; an elegant tool for a more civilized age. For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times... *cough*

Oh, my God, that's the funniest thing I've heard on BF in a LOOOOONG time. Hahahah. Buddy, you made me laugh so hard.

I'm one of the biggest SW nerds you'll ever meet, and you nailed the quote almost perfectly. He could either get a lightsaber, or something with a cortosis weave in it. ;)
