Has anyone else experienced this advanced form of self delusion?

I keep thinking that I just don't have the RIGHT knives, so if I can get the one I need, it'll all be okay.

I'm so glad my wallet doesn't have teeth, because that thing HATES me at this point.

All of my purchases started out that way when I began collecting. I justified all purchases by buying a knife in a catergory I didn't already have ie: "I don't have a 4" fixed blade edc knife so I need to buy (insert knife here)...

Now, I buy whatever I "need" in the moment and sell it if I don't like it or carry it and use it. It's a vicious circle of impulse buying and spendiness!

My wallet hates me too.:D

I'm actually really close to being fully satisfied.
There are just 3 more that need to go for something I know I'll keep.
So hopefully I can get that together soon. =]
Lol.

Years ago.
I actually believed it...:foot:
Now I realize the truth, which is that there is always more.:)

I thought that a couple weeks ago. I thought "I just want an Ultratech and then I'll be done for a while." Well then of course I needed a Combat Troodon. And then an Hk Tumult so I have something to compare to the Microtechs. And so on.

Yeah, figment of the imagination!
Though.....I went the longest after I got my Grayman Dua, however a way to hard to ignore deal popped up in the exchange, and I got a Hinderer XM-18 in the size and scales I "needed" to make my universe complete.
until the next one.......:)

I've found myself pondering this same thing.

When I get to the point that a knife that "I just had to have" is sitting there doing nothing for a few months, I make myself think about selling it (like, seriously consider what I'd be missing if I sold it) and that way, I only have so many in the collective.

I'm really only on the hunt for one or two knives out there now, and I'm not really in any big hurry on either. I'm excited about a few that are yet to be released, but I've really wound down in terms of "having" to have any knives out there.

I just reached the point where I am pretty satisfied with what I have, and after adding up what I have spent so far, I was a little surprised, so I'm giving it a rest for a little while. I don't have a vast collection, but enough variety that I can enjoy it.

I went through the same thing with guns. I reached a point where I realized that there wasn't anything else that I couldn't do without.

I've successfully whittled my interests down to one production company and one custom maker. But I have no intention of buying "one last knife" from either of them, until I am forced to (death, going out of business, hitting the financial wall, etc).

im thinking the yojimbo 2 is gonna be that knife been waiting on it so long now shes on her way to the house... I also thought the 550 and 560 has gonna do it for me too... then oh the emerson cqc8 was gonna be my last knife.....then i saw the super commander.... Its a vicous cycle my friends.

It is a an addiction..

Here is the definition:

Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors.

Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.

I wanted a couple of Spyderco models: the Military and Paramilitary 2 in blade super-steels. Well, now I have eight. I am looking for things to sell. My wife said we have to keep the washer and dryer...

I have used that lie on myself before. Now, I just ignore it and get what I want.

That's how I first started, I planned on getting one folder for EDC(Para 1), one SAK for the woods (pionner/Harvester- wood saw, harvester blade, wood awl) one for EDC (Supertinker- scissors, can/bottle opener, screw drivers) one medium fixed blade for camping (Bravo-1) and one big chopper for camping (ESEE Junglas).
Well after several weeks of reading reviews and learning about steels I decided a Para 1 would be my EDC blade, but then I also wanted the Delica in ZDP-189 for edge holding, and an H1 salt for swimming, something else as a work knife, then I found out about sprints and it went down hill from there. So I'm attempting the same thing with guns, hopefully it goes better, my plan:

CCW: Kahr CW9
9mm Pistol: Sig P226 (picking it up in a week)
.45acp Pistol: Springfield XD Tactical, May switch to H&K USP or HK45
Shotgun: Mossberg 930 SPX
AR-15: Will probably build one
AK-47: Mak-90
.22 Plinker: Ruger 10/22
Hunting Rifle: Tikka in .308

and that's it, I'm done, if I get another 9mm I'll decide which I like better and sell it... that's the plan anyway (although the CZ 75 SP-01 and Glock 17 are tempting me), and I keep coming up with new categories, instead of just shotgun Semi-auto and pump, originally AK-47 and AR-15 was just one category.

It is so funny, I am new to this and have said this after buying my last 4 knives. At least I now know that this is a lie.
