if i wanna use leaf springs, old lawnmower blades, old files etc.
can anyone tell me what of the three are the best? and what i need to do to prepare them for my stock removal knifemaking process?

5160 costs about a dollar a foot at you automotive local spring shop.
Just get some of the pieces they cut off and go.

First thing you need if you don't have it already is a good knifemaking book or two.

Then search the forum archives for advice.

Use leaf springs and files, but to prepare for stock removal, annealing as per the specs of each steel will be needed to soften the material. Annealing specs for both 5160 (leaf springs) and 1095 (files) can be found at the Admiral steel website I believe.

if the question is - "What is the most important thing to remember about trying to use leaf springs in knifemaking?"...

My answer would be -
"To always make sure the car you get the leaf springs from has stopped moving"
