If I Were To Criticize Spyderco , an' I Think I Will , It Would Be The Unchamfered Handle Slots

WHAT IS UP WITH THAT !
I finally found a deburing tool that is adequately effective at getting into the slots to take off those sharp edges.

Is it to make the knife easier to pick up off a flat surface ? ? ?
I doubt that was a conscious choice .
Once one has picked up the knife the underside of the handle where the blade folds into is disappointingly sharp and uncomfortable.

I just don't understand why this has slipped past R&D for decades .
I buy a thirty or fifty dollar , off shore made , knife and the blade slot is nicely smoothed and finished .
I buy a four hundred dollar plus Spyderco and I can almost slice my fingers on the blade slot .
!
I bring it up because I just debured / rounded over / chamfered the blade slot on my brand new Endela PD # 1
While I was at it I did the same on my old Q Ball .
First knife I think I did when I got this new tool was my C171TI BLP Mike Draper Titanium .
Both my Stepped Titanium (serious money) Chaparrals were standing in line saying " Do Me ! " " Do Me ! " " Do Me ! "
BOTH Handle slots sharp as F !

I love you Spyderco ; I just ordered a Lil' Native G-10 Wharncliffe minutes ago .
BUT
WTF ?

Sal ?

I think the OP is talking about the liners. They are probably stamped out and have a sharp edge for the OP.

Gotchya. The “inside” edge of the scales.

I’ve never found it a problem with the Spydercos I’ve owned.
I did once lightly chamfer a spydiehole that was particularly abrupt.

On a serious note, the pd#1 Endela is black, right ? Must look interesting now. Show us a photo, please.

Obviously the “issue” isn’t an issue and nothing has slipped by QC. If you follow Spyderco here and on the Factory forums, you’d know they’re one of the only companies that interact and listen to customer feedback. They haven’t changed anything because the percentage of “complaints “ for the matter you’re describing must be small. As mentioned earlier in thread it’s easier to mod on your end than “fix” a nonexistent problem for most users. I mod most of my Spyderco users to suit my own preferences…easy enough. 😎

Black blade, which has nothing to do with sharp edges on the handle ; so the blade is stock looking in every way .
The rounded edges of the handle look like they would from the factory only not sharp edged .
Nothing to see .
It is a tactile thing .
Funny how sharp edged blade holes have been a topic over and over .
Two , much longer , sharp edges on the under side of the handle go completely undetected.
Bottom line : it is sloppy .

I see a lot of things people just PUT UP WITH that could be more civilized and pleasant .
In some ways you all are lucky .

As far as photos I can only bring up old photos from the past here .
Cannot post new photos . Again nothing to see in any case . Radius replaced sharp edges ; same otherwise .
Now if I had used a file as some have recommended would probably have some chatter marks in the Burgundy FRN .

I understand your frustration, and I have experienced the sharpness to some extent. The one knife I noticed it on more than others is a G-10 Stretch 2 XL, that has steel liners that come all the way to the surface – the edges of the liners are uncomfortably sharp. I really like the G-10 S2 XL, but those edges need to be chamfered before I carry/use it. To a lesser extent I have noticed some FRN handles with slot edges (where the blade goes) that are somewhat sharp. I nearly always buy Spyderco knives with G-10 handles when possible, and I have not noticed the issue with those knives (Native Chief, Military 1 & 2, Sage and others).

What tool did you use to chamfer your handle slot edges?

SHAVIV 90113 Cera-Burr Curve Q11

Comes in a plastic tube with a plug in the end . Does not retract . Tip not replaceable like most debrruing tools are .
Keep the plastic tube for storage . I get the impression that the ceramic end could get broken off if dropped or banged around in a tool box.

It has done surprisingly well for me at staying sharp and getting into places . I have a bunch of more conventional swivel / sheet metal deburring tools and a big o' debrruing "knife" , for jewelry making ; has a long triangle blade .

this Shaviv is doing it for me better than anything I've found so far .

I was kind of concerned using it much on FRN . Some how I think the glass (?) fibers in FRN may be harder on it than stainless knife liners .
After doing a bunch of SS linners it was still just as sharp as it came new to me . So I'm pleased with it .
PS : you might find one on the big river .

Some people like handles with right angles and some like chamfered. Not all knives need to fit your preference.

My Superblue Delica had this issue. Simple fix with some fine grit sandpaper and it was no longer an issue.

Haven't tried the Golden lightweights. But the Seki lightweights have sharp, unchamfered, interior corners on the FRN along the edges where the blade comes out. This is where my fingers are gripping the knife; and I find unchamfered edges to be uncomfortable.

Overall, I don't really find it to be an issue. I use a knife blade at 90 deg to the corner to do my own chamfer. Takes me about 5 minutes to fix it the way I want. (Since I don't ever sell my knives, I am free to do whatever I feel needs to be done without worrying about affecting the resell value.)

The G10 scales on my military 2 salt were a bit sharp on the inside corners too. The corner of some folded up 800 grit sandpaper took care of it in a minute or less. Used a nail file on a seki model or two in the past with similar success.

I tend to be critic about just everything but I think that this one is a feature more than a defect.
Maybe it's because I've got very thick skin on my hands but I love the sharpness because it guarantees me an effective deployment come hell or high water.
It's kind of like the rough pattern on the button of Microtech knives that so many people complain about.
You'll be grateful you have it at least that one time when you'll REALLY REALLY need it.

Edit: Sorry I'm an idiot. I didn't realize you were talking about the inside edge of the handle scales.
I run a round Spyderco ceramic hone on the inside of every knife over and over (Spyderco or not because you get this on many others as well) to square the edge off, then I follow up with a piece of 220 grit sandpaper or whatever I have at hand wrapped around the hone. I don't mind because even it wasn't sharp it would still be squarish, and I hate hotspots so this is something that I do with basically every folder. Hell, I even to this to my Crucartas that don't even come that sharp.

A few years back I bought this deburr tool that has a hollow handle to hold the bits for under $15 a well worth tool

And I recently used it on a lightweight Native Chief the soften the edges of the scales as they are quite crisp, very easily done chore.
And as the photo shows, it’s not just Spyderco that has this issue.

I agree the inside slot where the blade goes on the seki frn knives is sharp. My endelas and delicas i took a small piece of sandpaper and rounded over and smoothed those inside handles. Made a big difference when your really gripping on it hard using it hard.

I also think they should release the delica 5/endela 5 and simply extend the blade to fill up the unused portion of the handle.
