If knives were cars

Made me think of The Middleman TV show :
The Alleged Car: Wendy's Hruck Bugbear AKA "the poor man's Yugo."
  • The Middleman: Sweet mother of Preston Tucker! Did you pick him up in that?
  • Wendy: Yes!
  • The Middleman: You said you had a car!

^ Yup that's exactly what I had in mind, that thing is a tin can w wheels and an engine; utilitarian from the word go....

These comparisons just never work, but keeping it lighthearted, as the OP intended, doesn't Spyderco have to equate to Acura, since that's what Sal drives? ;-)

Lets see ... reliable and tough ... Buck 110 and a Duce 'n a Half?
Reliable and inexpensive ... No clue what a current reliable and inexpensive car would be ... IMHO new cars all be over priced.
(I remenber in 1973 you could buy a 1973 Camaro for $3495, with few options.
$3495 isn't even a qualifying down payment for a new Camaro today.)
All I can afford knife-wise is Rough Rider (fortunately I like traditional knives)
Maybe a Fiat 850 Spider or a air cooled VW Beatle or "thing" (with the then new pricing) would equate?
Prices for a used Air Cooled Beatle or "Thing" today is considerably more than when they were new. :(
Or maybe a 1960 to 1964 Corvair 4 door sedan? Practical, reliable, and back then, affordable.
I had fun with the 1969 Fiat 950 Spider I had.
It didn't cost too much nack in 1978/1979 when I had it. (48 mpg in the city felt pretty good, too.)

A lot of girls lay in my Yugo.....once upon a time :) I don't remember them complaining about being tight inside :p

Maybe stupid but could be fun. What if knife companies were auto brands. Here’s how I kind of think they compare:

Mercedes- Spyderco
Toyota - Kizer
Chevy - Kershaw
Lexus - WE
Hummer - Medford
Bentley - Chris Reeve
Ford - Buck
RAM - Cold Steel
Maserati- Reate
BMW - Benchmade
Subaru - CRKT
Porsche- Emerson
Ferrari - Strider
KIA - Real Steel
Tesla - MicroTech
Acura - Hogue
Honda - Civivi
Audi - Zero Tolerance
Cadillac - Lion Steel
Hyundai - Boker
Other??

Hope this will be fun and not a lame-o thread.
I highly doubt you knowledge of knives and cars.

Last year I agreed with you about CRK equating to Bentley: Pricey. Timeless. Well built. Best purchased on the secondary market.

Though I would say that CRK has better service and dependability. ;)

That thread got moved to W&C, though I’m not sure why.

There was this thread too (which stayed in GKD):

It’s all god though. I’ll follow along
Thanks. I knew this had been done before, but was too lazy to look.

Chevy - Kershaw
Ford - Buck
RAM - Cold Steel

Having owned trucks from all 3 makes I'll agree with this.

Chevy good compromise and always works
Ford built from the ground up to work
Ram good trucks but the fanboys are a bit crazy

:) Some of the best Cold Steel = Up-armored Humvee :p except more affordable !

Subaru surely deserves better than CRKT ?

I’m sure your list would have been flawless. Never necessary to criticize another member, especially when you know nothing about them.

But we do know something about you... you're bad at car/knife comparisons. Clearly, CRKT should be paired with Porsche. Premium materials, total reliability and unmatched performance. They're a dead match!

I'm just kidding obviously... Porsches are crap.

To be honest, I think it's pretty easy for me to argue the pro or con on any of these pairings.

The only one that stands out is Spyderco as General Motors. Both American companies with their hands in global markets and offshore manufacturing for some lines. Both dabble in markets from baseline affordability up to high end performance and both stop short of the highest end luxury.

Toyota - Kizer.

I'm gonna take issue with the Toyota - Kizer point. Kizer is more like very early Kia. Check out those heat treat numbers, but not on a full stomach.

Chris Reeve, I wanna say 80 era Volvo. Rock solid engineering and dependability. And I guess you can get leather if you want.
